English Breakfast, the Library, and Geoffrey’s Polo Match

tea Jan 17, 2026

This morning, I enjoyed what the British refer to as a Full English Breakfast—and let me assure you, when the word full is involved, it is not to be taken lightly.

A proper Full English is not merely a meal. It is a declaration and a culinary assurance that one shall face the day fortified, steady, and entirely unflappable.

And of course, presiding over this noble affair was a perfectly brewed cup of English Breakfast tea—bold, brisk, and unwaveringly reliable, from Twinings.

Traditionally, a Full English breakfast is an ensemble cast:

Eggs, cooked with intention.
Toast, unapologetically present.
Bacon or sausage, depending on one’s household and moral philosophy.
And sometimes mushrooms or tomatoes, included to maintain balance and a sense of virtue.

It is a breakfast designed not for haste, but for fortitude. One does not rush a Full English. One sits with it and reflects upon the day ahead, while nodding approvingly at the tea.

English Breakfast Tea is the cornerstone of this ritual. Strong. Grounded. Decisive. It does not flirt. It does not surprise. It simply and consistently reports to work—day after day—like a trusted butler who knows precisely how you take your tea and would never dream of asking again.

It provides the quiet confidence necessary for important matters… such as deciding what to do next.

After breakfast, I naturally retired to the library, as one does, to conduct one's best thinking. Seated at my desk, pen in hand (or rather, fingers poised with great seriousness), I found myself writing away with purpose and composure. The room felt just right—warm, quiet, soft lighting glowing about the room, book-lined, a chesterfield chair and in my case, crystals, as all proper workspaces should include as accoutrements.

And yet, amid my productivity, a most curious thought drifted in...

I began to wonder—quite unprompted and with no factual basis whatsoever—whether Geoffrey had won his polo match.

I do not know Geoffrey.
I do not know which polo match.
I do not know why this concern entered my mind.

And still, it felt important.

This is, I suspect, simply what happens after a Full English breakfast and a respectable cup of English Breakfast tea. One’s thoughts become expansive. One’s mind wanders politely. One feels connected to outcomes of which one has absolutely no direct knowledge.

I continued writing, of course—one must maintain discipline—but every so often I paused, gazing thoughtfully across the desk, silently wishing Geoffrey well in his athletic endeavors. One hopes he played well. One hopes the weather held. One hopes the tea afterward was top notch.

Upon conclusion of my work this afternoon, I pondered on how the rest of the day should proceed. Should I engage in other proper activities such as:

  • reading quietly for a while, holding a teacup with two fingers and impeccable posture

  • taking a brief stroll, contemplating matters of no real urgency

  • rearranging something in the drawing room that does not strictly need rearranging

  • or sitting quite still, gazing thoughtfully out a window as though something profound is occurring internally

Later, I may engage in something mildly productive—nothing strenuous, of course. The Full English has already done the heavy lifting. Should the afternoon become overwhelming, there is always the knowledge that tea exists, and that order may be restored at any time with hot water and patience.

Today's English Breakfast Tea offered me this assurance: “You are quite capable. Keep Calm and Carry On.”

And with that, I felt fully equipped to proceed—calm, nourished, and poised to take everything in stride. My thoughts briefly returned to my entirely unexplainable concern about Geoffrey's polo match. Did he participate afterwards in the divot stomp? Was he now planning to have dinner at the clubhouse with his mates? One can not be too sure, even so, I soon carried on—comforted, productive, and very properly occupied.

Here’s to English Breakfast, dignified mornings, and the subtle joy of having an entirely, impeccably proper day. Cheerio!
