Dear Readers,
Happy Holidays! I love how many joyous occasions are ongoing during this time! My celebration of the season is focused on the entire holiday season, rather than on one particular day or another.
To me, it is a Festival of Light, beginning with Winter Solstice and the ancient rituals and celebrations of the return on the Sun Light and end of dark days. The celebration continues onward, not just through Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but all the way into Mardi Gras!
I love to incorporate the spirit of the season in many ways, including my holiday decorations. My Christmas tree for example is placed next to my Solstice Sun watching over the tree and the tree is filled with a variety of ornaments including fairies. Each ornament on the tree holds special meaning and significance and I love to add new ornaments each year. This year my favorite new ornament is the St. Louis Cathedral, a historical landmark in New Orleans. You can see the ornament here on the tree, I love that it has a tiny light inside which illuminates the cathedral.
I also love to connect with the spirit and sentiment of Santa Claus, which began with the legend of St. Nicholas, whose generosity of spirit led to him giving gifts to fill other’s lives with holiday cheer and abundance. The spirit of giving lives on in each of us when we engage in this tradition and give in joy to others.
The best example of the Spirit of Giving in Santa Claus style that I’ve seen recently is in this news report, where people are anonymously paying off stranger’s layaway accounts at K-mart. One woman started this trend, and her only requirement was that the layaway she was paying off, have toys for children.  This random act of kindness has spread to other strangers who are paying off layaway accounts of people whom they do not know. As the news gets out, others are following suit and doing the same in K-mart’s in several states and now Walmart stores are reporting that people are offering to pay off stranger’s layaway accounts in their stores as well.  It’s such a wonderful sentiment in the Spirit of the Season and Santa and a powerful reminder that each of us can touch another person’s life in a very profound and long lasting manner. It does not take much, just a simple act of random kindness.
My Spirit of the Season wish for you is that your days are filled with much love, light and laughter as you spend time with the loved ones in your life.
