Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with authors about their work. My guest today is Vanessa Fewings.
Award-winning author Vanessa Fewings is currently writing book three in her erotic novel Enthrall trilogy. Enthrall Her is set for release on May 20th, 2014. Vanessa is also the author of the highly acclaimed Stone Masters Vampire Series. Piper Day’s Ultimate Guide to Avoiding George Clooney is her latest novel. The romantic comedy has already garnered a buzz of excitement from readers around the world.
Prior to publishing, Vanessa worked as a registered nurse and midwife. She holds a Masters Degree in Psychology. She has traveled extensively throughout the world and has lived in Germany, Hong Kong, and Cyprus. Born and raised in England, Vanessa now proudly calls herself an American and resides in California with her husband.
I had the delightful experience of serving on an author’s panel with Vanessa as we spoke at the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Undead Conference last October in New Orleans. It’s my pleasure to chat with her here on the Blog about her work.
Kala: Hi Vanessa, welcome to Kala’s Quick Five. What inspired or called to you to become an author?
Vanessa: Hi Kala, Thank you for inviting me over to your inspiration blog! I’m thrilled to be here!
I wrote my first novel, Dogs, when I was around nine-years-old. Other than when I was fifteen, I didn’t write again for many years, until a character turned up out of nowhere and nudged me to start writing again. That character was Jadeon Artimas, a dashing, aristocratic vampire, and there are now five books in The Stone Masters Vampire Series.
I believe I was born a writer. After many twists and turns in my life, I came back to it naturally and with enough experience to enrich my work.
Kala: Your books explore the paranormal, romance, chick lit, the supernatural and the erotic. What attracted you to these genres and do you have a favorite?
Vanessa: I started out writing in the paranormal genre. I’ve always been a fan of Anne Rice, and it felt like a natural first step. The first book in the series was written as a gift for my sister. She was the one who recommended to get the novel published. The books unfold naturally, and there are now four books, as well as a short story.
Recently, I was inspired to write a romantic comedy:
Piper Day’s Ultimate Guide to Avoiding George Clooney. It’s a project I did with Christina Cannarella. There’s been some interest to adapt the book into a TV series.
I also pen an erotic romance series called the Enthrall Sessions. These books have a quickly growing fan base. Enthrall Her will be released in May, and there’s already a lot of excitement from readers who loved Enthrall.
While I’m currently writing a book it’s my favorite. I have a special place in my heart for everything I’ve written. Each book is lovingly crafted and I often hear from readers that they sense that from my work.
Kala: Authors are often given the advice to “write what they know”. In your case, do you write about what you’ve experienced or do you experience new situations through your writing? What have your characters and your books taught you about life?
Vanessa: I’ve delved into time periods or subjects I once knew little about, and researched them as I went along. I love to learn new stuff!
As authors, it’s thrilling to write about worlds we are unfamiliar with. Lots of research is needed to pull off a book so that the reader believes wholeheartedly that the character is truly immersed in the experience.
Writing soothes my soul. My characters teach me so much. Sometimes, just observing how they react is enlightening. Take Cameron Cole, my latest alpha-male hero in the Enthrall Session, he’s a psychiatrist and always interacts with mindfulness.
Kala: I had such a great time with you on our author panel at the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Ball and Undead Conference as we spoke about our books. What’s next for you, are you traveling, working on new books?
Vanessa: It was so much fun, wasn’t it Kala! Attending the Anne Rice Vampire Lestat Ball and Undead Con was a highlight of last year for me. I was blessed to spend so much time with you there. Suzie Quiroz does a tremendous job of organizing the event. It really is a
breathtaking weekend of festivities. I’ve made so many incredible friends. And of course meeting Anne Rice and her son Christopher was a dream come true. I tried not to over fan-girl on her! She was as gracious and beautiful as I’d knew she’d be.
I’m having fun promoting Enthrall Her right now, and will soon be back in my writer’s cave crafting the third book in the series Enthrall Him.
I hope to visit the United Kingdom next year. I haven’t visited the UK for a long time and as I was born there, it holds a special place in my heart.
Kala: Vanessa, how do you “explore your spirit”? What soothes, rejuvenates and uplifts you?
Vanessa: I believe that exploring your spirit is all about being honest with yourself. To rejuvenate, I love to listen to music, read, as well as surround myself with nature. Spending time with family and friends is very grounding. I rejuvenate when I’m writing.
Kala, thank you again for inviting me over to your wonderful blog! Truly, it’s been an honor!
