compassion and a discerning desire to provide service
to humanity. Let us gather together each day as
we Explore Your Spirit”.

“The charming and delightful Kala Ambrose has
invited me on her radio program Explore Your
Spirit with Kala many times, and I have always
thoroughly enjoyed myself. In the pages of her
fascinating new book Ghosthunting North Carolina,
she has invited all of us to join her on a haunted
road trip through North Carolina, and once again,
I found myself completely enjoying the journey.
Kala received the “gift” of paranormal talents,
including the ability to see and sense spirits,
when she was only a child. She generously shares
this gift with her readers as she explores a
remarkable number of haunted houses and places
in North Carolina. I very much appreciated Kala’s
sharing the history of some of these very famous
locations, as well as her psychic impressions
of certain ethereal residents who have never
left their beloved homes. Kala allows us to perceive
her insights into a wide range of ghostly entities
from the frightening to the benign, from the
violent to the gentle. I highly recommend this
book.” —Brad Steiger,
author of over 170 books, including Real Ghosts,
Restless Spirits, and Haunted Places.
“Not everyone can write a ghost story. Luckily for us, Kala Ambrose can. In Ghosthunting
North Carolina, Kala takes us on a fabulous armchair road-trip featuring pirates,
flaming ghost ships, haunted hotels, and spirits of every persuasion, including
the friendly, the eerie, and the downright scary. Kala also provides clear, concise,
user-friendly instructions on how to transform a virtual trip into an actual
one. I, for one, was ready to start driving to and through North Carolina as
soon as I finished Ghosthunting North Carolina. I suspect you will be, too.” –Judika
Illes, author of The Encyclopedia of Spirits, The Encyclopedia of 5000 Spells,
and The Weiser Field Guide to Witches.
“A road trip with a difference! Kala Ambrose explores the spectacular beauty
of the Tar Heel State while using her psychic skills to seek beneath the surface
for the phantom soldiers, pink ladies and lost spirits who still inhabit the
houses or wander the roads of this beautiful landscape. A skilful mix of lore
and legend, which will linger on in the reader’s mind long after the book has
been closed. “ — Dr. Bob Curran, author of Dark Fairies, Vampires: A
Field Guide to the Creatures that Stalk the Night, Lost Lands, Forgotten Realms
and over 24 additional books on paranormal lore.
“If you’re into all-things-spooky, spectral and spine-tingling, then Kala Ambrose’s
Ghosthunting North Carolina is the book for you! Best devoured on the proverbial
dark and stormy night!” –Nick Redfern, author of The Real Men in Black.
"I’m actually starting to plan a NC vacation
based on this book! It might take a year of planning,
but I can think of no better way to spend a few
weeks than scoping out some of the wonderfully
spooky places that are mentioned in this book!"

Kala's
Rowan Society
Kala Ambrose is the Director of the Rowan
Society. Here are answers to some of the
most frequently asked questions about The
Rowan Society (TRS) and what they research.
Myth and Folklore About the Rowan Tree
According to legends, the Rowan Tree’s mythic
roots go back to ancient times. It is said
that the Rowan tree increases psychic abilities
and communication with the spirit realms
as well as assisting with discernment in
understanding which spirits mean well and
which are threatening. It was also valued
as a protection against enchantment, unwanted
influences and evil spirits. The Rowan Tree
is reportedly associated with protection,
healing, courage and psychic powers.
In Norse mythology, the Rowan is reported
to have saved the life of the god Thor by
bending over a fast flowing river in the
Underworld and helping him back to the shore.
In addition, Rowan sticks were used to carved
runes. In the ogham letters, Rowan is a derivitive
from the second letter, luis. It means a
quickening of energy which drops the veils
between the planes.
Greek mythology tells of how a godess was
feeding the gods ambrosia from her chalice.
When the chalice was stolen by demons, the
gods sent a magic eagle to retrive the cup.
The eagle was injured in the fight and lost
some feathers and blood which dripped down
to the earth where they turned into Rowan
trees. It is said this is how the shape of
the rowan leaves and berries were created.
In Celtic lore, the Druids were said to
light fires made of Rowan wood to chant incantations
which summoned spirits to help in rituals.
In addition, the Druids made special beds
with the wood, which upon sleeping on them,
led them into psychic trances. The physical
characteristics of the tree (the tiny five
pointed star on each berry opposite its stalk)
led to its reputation of being an instrument
of protection, along with the color red which
in Celtic time was deemed to be the best
color to ward against dark enchantments.
In addition, the white flowers which bloom
from the tree represent the goddess energy.
To this day, in some regions, a Rowan tree
growing on a property will not be removed,
so strong is the belief of its ability to
protect people and the property on which
it grows.
TRS has adopted the Rowan Tree as its symbol.
It is our hope that the Rowan Tree will share
its protective and intuitive qualities with
us, as we journey to understand more about
the spirit realms.

What does TRS do?
The Rowan Society is a private organization,
founded to research and explore paranormal
phenomena in many of its forms, including
hauntings, psychic development, and ancient
mysteries. Located in North Carolina, we

from individuals regarding paranormal experiences.
In our endeavors, we present what we believe
to be documentation of paranormal activity.
This includes, but is not limited to ghost
