Exploring Faith, Dogma and Spirituality

On this episode of the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, Kala speaks with Duann Kier about her book, Fundamentalisman: Resurrecting the Fundamentals of Relationship from the Fundamentalism of Religion. In the book, Duann asks the following questions: If you are a Christian fundamentalist and your beliefs are working for you because you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are right and real, this book is probably not for you. If you are a Christian fundamentalist and are beginning to question some of the beliefs you’ve been taught along the way, this book may be for you. If you are—or once were—a Christian fundamentalist and your beliefs just aren’t working for you anymore, this book is definitely for you.

She then asks these soul-searching questions:
• Would you be a Christian if there were no heaven or hell?
• Is the fear of hell the main reason you are a Christian?
• Do you sometimes wonder whether you are really saved from hell?
• Do you really have the peace that passes all understanding?
• Do you find no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to be the person that you want to be?
• Do you truly feel loved and cherished by your creator?

These are not comfortable questions to ask oneself, but if you are ready, Duann encourages you to stay with her to read the book to its end…

The Astral City and Healing Temples

Movie: The Astral City

A movie has recently caught my attention that I’d like to share with you. It’s titled The Astral City and was filmed in Brazil. The movie is in Portuguese and has English subtitles.

This film was recently brought to my attention and I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the film! It describes what I have seen when I have visited the other spiritual planes and what life is like on the other side, in the astral realms and the other spiritual realms.
Even more astounding, during the healing segments shown on film, what they depict is very similar to what I describe in my new book, The Awakened Aura of how healing temples were once built here on the earth plane to heal at the body mind spirit level and how healing is experienced on the other side.
I highly recommend this film and if you’ve read my book, The Awakened Aura you’ll enjoy seeing the depictions of what I describe in the book.  It also shares the effect of karma in our lives and describes some but not all of the spiritual planes that exist on the other side.
It is my dream to build a healing center of this kind once again here on the earth plane in service to humanity. The seven healing techniques described in The Awakened Aura are being touted as the future of energy medicine and what would be incorporated in the healing centers.

Decoding the 144,000 mathematical matrix

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Gary McDonald, author of Everything You Need to Know to Get to Heaven: Decoding the Bible The Secret Behind 2012. Gary holds dual Bachelor of Business Administration degrees in Marketing and Finance from the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and a Master of Arts in Counseling from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. A Licensed Professional Counselor in Colorado, he is well versed in spiritual subject matter, dream interpretation, trained in past life regression, and has worked with Celtic, Native American, and Peruvian shamans. A businessman and entrepreneur, McDonald has dedicated his life to serving humankind both nationally and internationally. More info at: EverythingYouNeedToKnowToGetToHeaven.com or more simply EverythingHeaven.com

Kala: Gary, the title of your book is “Everything You Need to Know to Get to Heaven.” I’m curious, saying that you know “Everything” that a person needs to know to get to heaven, is a very bold statement. How did you determine that you could write and include everything?

Gary: In my early thirties I somehow came to the realization that I had a special message I needed to communicate to the world, and that this was one of the primary reasons for me to be here on earth at this time. I intuitively knew that it is in my spiritual contract; the one I created for myself before I was born. The book title seemed to come to me out of nowhere. My initial intention was to write an overview of spirituality but I never imagined until much later that it would develop into what it did. As I delved into new age concepts – something new to me at the time – I suddenly began having very extraordinary experiences. One morning upon awakening, I felt as if I was being held in the palm of God’s loving hand and at that moment I was shown my own soul. Later I began having out-of-body experiences that provided a glimpse of other dimensions. One morning, again upon awakening, my third eye opened up completely and I saw the universal matrix and a spiritual download of information flooded into me. For a nanosecond I had become enlightened. It was quite overwhelming. On another occasion I left my body through my third eye and went to the sixth heaven. Yes, there is more than one heaven. There are actually seven. Why do you think we say “I’m in seventh heaven”? It is a soul truism. We talk about spiritual truths on a daily basis without even realizing it. As I began to piece together religion, new age principles, ancient philosophies, and science, I began to see the “big picture.” It was like putting together a giant God puzzle. Eventually I came to a point where it all made sense. Everything is interrelated. God is everything which makes everything sacred. It is mankind that corrupts Spirit’s creations because we fell in consciousness. But there is a reason for our fall. We fell in consciousness so that we could experience these dimensions as our reality. Without a fall, none of this would seem real. It is real of course, but it is not our truest reality. Our task now, is to return to our original point of enlightenment. That involves an evolving consciousness, individually and collectively. That is our journey and it is detailed quite extensively in my book.

Kala: How did you come up with the belief that there are only 144,000 souls in this universe and why only 144,000?

Gary: Oh, that is a great question. During my spiritual download, when I witnessed the matrix, I realized that this universe is based on mathematics. The subtitle of my book is Decoding the Bible – The Secret Behind 2012. Throughout the Bible, it talks about God’s chosen people, the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In each tribe there are exactly 12,000 members. Twelve (tribes) multiplied times 12,000 (people in each tribe) equals 144,000 members. These people represent the exact number of people that will attain heaven. But obviously there are some flaws in the idea that the rest of us will be condemned to an eternity of hell. First, I don’t believe God has favorites, that He (She) would love certain people more than others. Isn’t He supposed to be an unconditionally loving God? So if God is an unconditionally loving Being, how could He condemn any one of His children to an eternity of hell no matter what we did? Assuming we all go to heaven (eventually), the only explanation is that when God created the universe, He created a specific number of souls, that number being 144,000. What this means is that we each, on average, are living 45,000-plus parallel lives just in this dimension alone. If you consider that the Oversoul is really one spiritual body in which we are all a part of – an ocean of consciousness in form – why would it be any more of a stretch to believe that we are each one soul living many parallel lives, all for the benefit of the experience? To negate this possibility limits God. Didn’t Jesus himself say that we are all gods and that we can perform greater miracles than He? In the book I explain in much greater detail how mathematically it makes complete sense.

Kala: The subtitle for your book is “The Secret Behind 2012.”.  What’s the secret?

Gary: Some of my dreams are prophetic. I can ask a question and I receive messages from what I believe is my soul. Often times they come in symbols and I use the Jungian style of dream analysis to interpret them. I have been doing it for nearly 20 years quite successfully predicting what lies ahead for me in the future. Sometimes the messages I receive are very straightforward. In one particular dream I was told that the transition to the next dimension – the fifth dimension – set to occur in 2012, will not occur on December 21st as everyone seems to think. It will actually occur the next day on December 22nd due to a quantum shift in time forward. Now the good news is that we have time to prepare for the transition. The bad news is that December 22nd is a Saturday, the day of the Sabbath. In the Book of Revelation it states the following:

“Pray that your flight will not take place in winter or on the Sabbath. For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again. If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.” Matthew 24:20-22

So it appears that Mankind may have chosen the more difficult path to the next dimension in that we are not ready this transition and therefore we must suffer the consequences of our poor choices. In effect, we are facing an upcoming Armageddon as an accelerated backlash of our own karma. This very difficult transition has been prophesied by Edgar Cayce, Nostradamus, the Hopi elders, John the Apostle, the prophet Daniel and many others. In my final chapter entitled Immortal Life Yoga I explain how best to prepare for this shift to the fifth dimension.

Kala: You have a hypothesis for Darwin’s “Missing Link Theory”, which merges with Intelligent Design. Can you explain this hypothesis to the readers?

Gary: Genesis states that man was made in the image of God. “So God created man in his own image…” Genesis 1:27
It is unlikely that God looks like an ape or what morphed into man as we know ourselves to be today. Therefore it would be obvious that the soul, as consciousness in form, is what was created in the likeness of God. But the question remains, When did ape become man? I believe that the introduction of the soul is the key to marrying the diverging concepts of Evolutionary Theory and Intelligent Design. When the ape was physically developed enough for a soul to reside in the form of the ape, ape became man. The term ape here again is used loosely; science suggests that chimpanzee may be more accurate. The main point I am trying to make here is that the addition of a soul’s consciousness to ape form is what made man a man. This theory would explain how the divergence between ape and man occurred without the extinction of the parent organism. Before the introduction of the soul into ape, all ape forms were more or less soul-less beings, or rather beings without the superior God Consciousness aspect in them, similar to how they exist today. The ape, as is true for all animals, is not conscious to the level of man. Animals tend to operate more on instinct and do not have freedom of choice to the extent that man does. The increased level of consciousness that occurred when individualized souls entered apes created a higher level of conscious being, immediately causing a split from the ape form. The parent ape continued as an ape because in effect it remained a completely distinct creature. The ape did not become extinct as Darwin suggests it should have because the higher level of consciousness created in ape-man was in essence a new type of being unrelated to the ape. With the addition of the soul, there was a split or divergence in the line of apes. Apes continued as the parent species virtually unaltered because the child species was born with a new consciousness. In this way, the unaffected parent species could continue its existence and even coexist with the new ape-man species, and did. Therefore, the key to merging both theories is the introduction of soul consciousness into the ape form making both theories true. Conversely, the story of Adam and Eve is just that, a story, which too is decoded in my book.

Kala: In your book, you discuss redefining the Holy Trinity. How do you feel that it should be redefined?

Gary: The Trinity collectively represents all levels of consciousness. It is the light and the darkness, the unmanifested and the manifested, form and non-form, energy and non-energy, personal and impersonal. The Father or the Impersonal God, the truest essence of God, is unmanifested; it is non-form and non-energy and pure consciousness. Inherent within the all-knowing Impersonal God is an infinite number of possibilities. Out of the unmanifested Impersonal God was born the Personal God as the Christ Body through the energy of the Holy Spirit as God’s thought expressed into form. The Christ Body is Spirit manifested in form or Spirit-form. The Christ Body is also considered the Supreme Personality of God or the Personal God. The Christ Body has a dual nature. As an undivided being or singular soul, it is one Oversoul. The Christ Body simultaneously is also all points of individual God Consciousness or souls. It is both one being and many beings at the same time. It is a point of God Consciousness and many points of God Consciousness concurrently. These Christ Body beings, collectively as one, and individually as many, in a state of perfection vibrate at the level of Christ Consciousness. It is only through the Christ Body that we come to know the Impersonal God.

The Holy Spirit is the Impersonal God’s creative energy (God’s thought expressed) and the universal life force that sustains all life. It is the life force within each of us. On the spiritual plane, it is considered the feminine aspect of God. On the physical plane, it’s represented in form by Mother Earth and by Mother Nature. The Holy Spirit acts as a wave of consciousness, whereas the Christ Body acts as an ocean of consciousness as well as particles of individual consciousness. Again, how God is defined depends upon which facet or aspect of God you are referring to or focusing on. The Holy Spirit is also Christ Consciousness itself; a level of being or enlightenment. It is Christ Consciousness itself versus a being that is Christ Conscious; a small but noteworthy distinction. The Christ Principle is material form, which is a creative product of the Christ Body made possible by the creative energies of the Holy Spirit. The Christ Principle has a lesser consciousness and is not considered a part of the Christ Body or Holy Spirit. However, in the truest sense, there is no separation between any one of these aspects; everything in reality is a part of one Universal God and everything else is a non-reality. What I have attempted to do here is condense a section of chapters into a few written words. This explanation is far from a complete explanation. For example, the Holy Spirit is also the mind of God, the vibration of Spirit and kundalini energy at the same time. There is a highly fascinating, more complete, explanation of the Trinity in my book.

Kala: Thank you for your time Gary, appreciate you joining me here on Kala’s Quick Five.

Gary: It is my pleasure.

Summoning the Fates to Explore Your Spirit

This week on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, Kala speaks with Z. Budapest, author of Summoning the Fates. During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Z. Budapest narrowly escaped a massacre. Was it chance that spared her life, or destiny? In Summoning the Fates, Budapest, a pioneer of the women’s spirituality movement, introduces us to the three Fates that rule our lives. Not even the gods and goddesses can escape these raw forces of nature presiding over the past, present, and future. Budapest uses fairy tales, historical lore, and personal anecdotes to describe the three sacred sisters who are especially active during our thirty-year life cycles: Urdh (youth), Verdandi (adulthood), and Skuld (the crone years). Want a taste of the cosmic soup bubbling in Fate’s cauldron? Budapest also offers heartfelt advice, exercises, and rituals to help you connect with the Fates and embrace your own unique destiny.

More About Z Budapest:
Zsuzsanna Emese Budapest was born in Budapest, Hungary, during a big winter storm on January 30, 1940. Her mother, Masika Szilagyi, was a medium and a practicing witch who supported herself and her daughter with her art, as a sculptress. Masika’s themes always celebrated the Triple Goddess and the Fates, and Zsuzsanna, “Z,” grew up respecting and appreciating Mother Nature as a god. The poverty of postwar Europe and political oppression under the Russian occupation made Z fiercely political, so when the Hungarian Revolution broke out in 1956, she took her destiny into her own hands and became one of those sixty-five thousand political refugees who left the country, mostly young workers and students like herself. She finished high school in Innsbruck, graduated from a bilingual gymnasium, and won a scholarship to the University of Vienna where she studied languages.

Z emigrated to the United States in 1959, became a student at the University of Chicago, married, and gave birth to two sons. Her family’s spiritual tradition, however, started seeping back into her life, and she practiced solo worship of the Goddess at her home altar in her backyard. When she entered her Saturn cycle at the age of thirty, she became involved with the women’s liberation movement in Los Angeles and became an activist herself, staffing the Women’s Center there for many years. There she recognized a need for a spiritual dimension so far lacking in the feminist movement and started the Women’s Spirituality Movement. She founded the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number l, the first feminist witches’ coven, which became the role model for thousands of other spiritual groups being born and spreading across the nation. She wrote The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries (Weiser Publishers, 1989) which was originally published in 1975 as The Feminist Book of Lights and Shadows. This book served as the first hands-on book to lead women into their own spiritual/Goddess heritage. Z was arrested in 1975 for reading Tarot cards to an undercover policewoman. She lost the trial but won the issue, and the law against psychics was struck down nine years later. Z has led rituals, lectured, taught classes, given workshops, written articles tirelessly, and published in hundreds of women’s newspapers across the country. She has powerfully influenced many of the future teachers and writers about the Goddess. She is the star of her own cable TV show called 13th Heaven and acts as the director of the Women’s Spirituality Forum, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a monthly lecture series in the Bay Area about the Goddess, spirituality retreats, and annual spiral dances on Halloween. Z founded and sponsors the Dianic University Online, a vagina-friendly online school for Dianic Wicca and Goddess studies for women. More info: www.zbudapest.com

Exploring Five Years with poet Cendrine Marrouat

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Cendrine Marrouat, an author, poet and freelance writer for Examiner.com. Her new book of poetry, Five Years and Counting: A Journey into the Mind of Soul, is the topic of our discussion for this interview.

Kala: Cendrine, you spent most of your life in France, before moving to Canada is 2003. How has your life experience of living in France and then moving to a new country, affected your writing and your view of the world?

Cendrine: I believe that everybody should be an immigrant at some point in their life. It would make a lot of people more humble and compassionate. As a result, the world would be a much better place.

I love Canada. I feel I belong here. However, a small portion of the population is very racist and I have had to bear the brunt of it, like many other foreigners. However, I am grateful for the experience. Now, I look at people in a different way and stop taking them for granted; I understand that most of the time, they are not even conscious that fears run their lives.

Also my relationship with God is more meaningful. And of course, it shows in my writing.

Kala: In your new book, ‘Five Years and Counting’, you selected poetry from a five year point of your writing and grouped it into what you describe as the most important stages of life, including: birth, teen years, adulthood and elevation. What inspired you to group the poetry this way and to write the book?

Cendrine: At the inception of my career in 2005, I knew a book like ‘Five Years and Counting’ would come along. I wanted to celebrate my first five years as a writer; it was a milestone for me.

Last year, as I reread my poetry from 2005 to 2009, I realized that my style had changed a lot. While the first poems focused on painful emotions, the more recent ones were assertive, peaceful and mature. Then in the middle, there were grieving and the search for answers at a deeper level. The stages came naturally, as I realized that poetry is both a personal and universal language.

‘Five Years and Counting’ contains more than 160 poems that will lead you through the labyrinth of life. Human beings start with the primal cry — the need to be heard. Then, they reach adolescence and look for independence. The adults they become find answers to most of their questions and start learning how to cope with the pain of losing. Elevation occurs when we are no longer afraid of experiencing life beyond loss and understand that there is beauty beyond death.

Kala: Looking back on these stages of your life, what did you discover about yourself, that you may not have been aware of, until you wrote about it?

Cendrine: I would not say that I discovered anything new about myself. Regrouping the pieces into stages helped me realize that I had really made the right decisions in my life.

Kala: As a poet and writer, what tips would you give to our readers, who may be interested in writing poetry for the first time or writing in general to express who they are and what they feel?

Cendrine: Always write with your heart and soul. Get out of your comfort zone and embrace your fears. Open yourself to the world and see it with the eyes of a child. Once you stop judging and comparing yourself to others, the rest will come in due time.

Kala: Beyond the work that you do as a writer, how do you ‘Explore Your Spirit’?

Cendrine: Exploring your/the Spirit is something that can be done at any moment of the day or night. When I am not busy with my journalistic career (I write five columns for Examiner.com and contribute articles to a few other sites and my poetry, I love spending time in nature and taking pictures. I also enjoy recording spoken word poetry (I am currently working on the new version of ‘Rizen‘, my debut CD) and listening to silence. If you have never sat in the middle of the night with your eyes closed and let silence whisper in your ears, you have not really enjoyed a true connection with God and your inner child.

Kala: Cendrine,  thank you for joining me here on Kala’s Quick Five. More about Cendrine and her book can be found at www.cendrinemarrouat.com

Cendrine: Thank you so much for the opportunity!

Crea Yoga and Conscious Action

Author Eve Baumohl Neuhaus studied and worked with Shri Mahant Swami Ganeshanand Saraswati Giri (known to students and friends as Ganesh Baba. Ganesh was initiated through the same Kriya Yoga lineage as Paramahansa Yogananda (see one of my all time favorite books – (Autobiography of a Yogi)

In Eve’s book, The Crazy Wisdom of Ganesh Baba: Psychedelic, Sadhana, Kriya Yoga, Kundalini and the Cosmic Energy in Man, she shares the core principles and teachings of Ganesh Baba including the conscious control of prana and breath, and how to expand the consciousness and connect with universal energy.

Ganesh Baba’s teachings are known as Crea Yoga and evolved from several practices including tantric practices from Kriya Yoga and his life experiences with the Naga Babas and their connection with Lord Shiva.

For Yoga aficionado’s, the book is a wonderful addition to your library, filled with pearls of wisdom and reminders of how daily practice of the body and the mind lead to living in spirit, beyond the illusion of time.

A personal favorite in the book for me is on page 89-90, which discusses the third level of Crea, which is defined as… ‘conscious action. This is the heart of practice: using your free will, your attention, consciously, to the greatest benefit of all’.

What is Consciousness? A Brain Surgeon speaks…

John_TurnerWhat is Consciousness? I spoke recently with friend Eva Herr about this very question. In her experience as a radio host and author, she has asked more than fifty learned people to respond, scholars in the study of the mind and consciousness. She said that she received fifty different answers. But I have a short and concise answer that she just may not have heard uttered. I want to share this with you.

Today, as I cut the grass on a beautiful and warm Hawaiian day, I didn’t think of consciousness as I steered the riding mower around the couple of lawn acres, not thought of it at all until I had to trim along the fences with a self propelled hand mower which, on the uphill grades, is not always effortless. Then it hit me: To have two gas-powered machines, let alone the fact that one can be mounted like a horse and has a drink receptacle, was truly a gift. I could have had to push some old-fashioned reel mower which would have required days of effort and may have stressed my heart. Well, it came soon on the heels of that thought that just to be able to ponder such a question is another gift, just as is my stopping to view the beautiful fluffy white clouds in an azure Hawaiian sky. So, what is consciousness?

My friend Robert Bruce, author of Astral Dynamics, asked me a dozen years ago if I could fashion an appendix for his book. He wanted me, as a brain surgeon, to describe the location of consciousness and the seat of the soul. I did this for him, taking time to study the work of great scholars.

There were many guesses as to the location of consciousness, but none seemed to be correct. According to Gerald M. Edelman, “Consciousness is neither a thing nor a simple property.” Edelman has asserted that a fundamental property of consciousness is that it cannot be broken down into independent components. That is to say, consciousness is integrated within the brain, and involves many widely separated areas.

I began my study with the work of the famous neurosurgeon Dr. Wilder Penfield (Montreal Neurological Institute), who found that vast areas of the cerebral cortex can be removed without affecting consciousness. However, small areas of the brainstem, when destroyed, will seriously affect or abolish consciousness. Brain stimulation cases show that found that the “mind,” not the brain, watches and directs human cognition and function.

turner-book-medicineThanks to Robert’s request for my opinion, I came across something that allowed me to finish my book, Medicine, Miracles and Manifestations as it seems to prove that we incarnate on Earth to follow a carefully crafted plan. That critical piece of information is the Bereitschaftspotential and as demonstrated by the work of Dr. Benjamin Libet, (University of California, San Francisco). Libet described it as a “readiness potential” that can be picked up by EEG electrodes (a la Libet) or in modern times, functional MRI studies. It is a brain signal that precedes a consciously-made motor movement by roughly 350 milliseconds and it indicates that what we seemingly do of our own volition is actually initiated in the subconscious mind. Although we feel we have made a conscious decision to do perform an act, it is not so.

I investigated the work of many other luminaries in the field and was left with the thought that can be best described by the following quotation:

On the surface of things, nothing appears as it is.

And yet, everything that appears unreal,

is more real than the surface of things appears to be.

Now, after having a few years to reflect on consciousness, to study the work of others and to listen to their learned discourses, I have reached a concise description of what consciousness is. Perhaps in a few years my thoughts will change, but for now, I will say this:

“Consciousness is a gift.  Consciousness is a miracle”.

Dr. John L. Turner was a guest on The Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show Listen to his interview here: http://exploreyourspirit.com/Media/shows8.shtml#TURNERMEDICINE

jtAfter graduating from the Ohio State University with a degree in engineering physics, Dr. Turner continued in graduate school at the Ohio State University, Department of Physics. Three years into the PhD program, he was given a book about Edgar Cayce, The Sleeping Prophet. This changed the course of his life! He was excited about the existence of a spiritual world and made immediate plans to attend the Ohio State University’s College of Medicine where he earned his M.D. He completed his internship year in general surgery and his first year neurosurgical residency at Ohio State University. He completed the remaining four years of neurosurgical training at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation. For eighteen years, he served as the sole neurosurgeon on the island of Hawai’i, initially performing lifesaving procedures with a marginally trained staff and substandard equipment. By all measures, John L. Turner is a surgeon with classic western medical credentials. From his first day on call in Hilo, Hawai’i, metaphysical events appeared for his edification and continue to the present day.

Medicine, Miracles, and Manifestations, is the twenty-year story of Dr. Turner’s contributions to the field of neurosurgery through Integral Medicine. The concept of Integral Medicine has been written about by notable members of the medical community, including Andrew Weil, Larry Dossey, Deepak Chopra, Mehmet Oz and Dean Ornish. Each of these writers is a physician who specializes in internal medicine or surgery. What makes John Turner similar to these writers is that he, too, is a physician. What makes him different from these writers is that he is a neurosurgeon. In fact, he is the only brain surgeon to write of medicine from this perspective: hand’s on use of complementary techniques prior to, during and after surgery, and exploration of pathways that lead to the spiritual world. The tools of the surgeon normally have more immediate, measurable results on patients’ health and well-being. With the opportunity to study and operate on the brain, Dr. Turner was in a perfect position to explore the mind-body connection. Medicine, Miracles, and Manifestations reveals how metaphysical events such as remote viewing, telepathy, consciousness and life-after-death are verifiable manifestations of the manner in which the human brain interfaces with the universal consciousness that author Lynne McTaggart refers to as The Field. The World Needs Autism

william_stillman(Condensed from the book The Soul of Autism: Looking Beyond Labels to Unveil Spiritual Secrets of the Heart Savants, published by New Page Books,
© 2008, William Stillman)

The world needs autism. Of this, I am convinced. The world needs autism now more than ever. Don’t believe me? Look around…look closely and carefully. Contemplate a global awareness. Consider the call to action we’ve received in recent times by way of grand-scale, devastating natural disasters and international terrorist attacks—which drastically spiked an online “rapture” index, a Christian speedometer that measures how quickly the world is careening toward the day of reckoning. Popular culture has relaxed ethical conduct so much so that films and television programming have desensitized us to sex, violence, and abusive language to the point of no further room in which to push the proverbial envelope. Motion pictures like Saw and its sequels, Wolfcreek, The Devil’s Rejects, Turistas, and Hostel have given rise to a pornographic franchise: human beings mutilating other human beings with sadistic ardor in gratuitous, graphic depictions of torture. Witness, too, the celebrity behavior we have come to condone as acceptable due to “wardrobe malfunctions,” racial rants and sordid misconduct. Although this book was written during wartime, it is the irresponsible misbehavior of certain public figures that made top news. There is vague accountability and fewer repercussions in consequence for one’s misdeeds which may, in fact, be rewarded post “rehab.” Further, the premise of most reality television is predicated upon lust, greed, manipulation, deceit, and the endeavor for physical beauty at all costs. Such cultural poison has anesthetized us to our own humanity.

Think people don’t emulate what they see? A recent Associated Press article speculates there’s an astounding drop in social etiquette—rudeness and amorality is on the rise. Corporate corruption has fostered employee disloyalty. Email has taken passive-aggressive interactions to new heights. The 2006 National Violent Crime Summit concluded that “crime is coming back” in a big way. USA Today recently cited an FBI estimate for a 94 percent increase in hate crime attacks against persons with developmental disabilities. Reports of “road rage” are a daily occurrence. “Happy Slapping” has become the latest craze: someone physically accosts an unsuspecting victim while another perpetrator records the assault with a camera-phone, and posts the attack online for all to see. Internet child sex predators are rampant, and child pornography has become more brutal with the number of images depicting violent abuse rising fourfold since 2003. Americans are insulated with artificial complacency from heinous international human-rights violations perpetrated by megalomaniac dictators. Instead, self-absorbed and selfish behavior without consideration of others has become the norm, it would seem. A “messiah complex” has emerged; we have become a narcissistic society bent on gratifying our own needs because “it’s all about me.” Violators of this pursuit are perceived as rivals. And it’s autistics that, clinically, are defined, in part, as lacking empathy and social reciprocity!

In early 2007, the Centers for Disease Control revised its autism statistics from the previous tally of 1 in every 166 children (which excludes countless untabulated adults), now suggesting that the national figures are closer to 1 in every 150. But perhaps the reverse statistic signifies the greater epidemic: of every 150 individuals, 149 are “normal” or neuro-typical! We so dearly need people with autism and other differences—in their mild, unaffected manner—to lend balance to the world, and refocus us on what’s truly important. Perhaps this principle resonates most with parents who have been obliged to undergo a personal transformation as a result of their child’s diagnosis—parents who otherwise may have succumbed to the messiah complex. One mother confessed, “I think [autism] has humbled me. I think I’m a pretty good parent, and I can do that sort of stuff well; but with autism, that ego is taken down a few pegs. I think it has helped me be more accepting of people with disabilities. Not that I was a complete anti-handicapped person before, but now I think more in terms of what people can do.”

Dwindling are the days of parental shame and self-deprecating guilt, as underscored by the mother who wrote, “Autism for me was a challenge not a defeat.” A new evolution is compelling parents to re-envision their lives, to see clearly their own transcendence, and to hold greater hope for the future. This is supported by research such as the “Qualitative Investigation of Changes in the Belief Systems of Families of Children with Autism or Down Syndrome,” a document that concludes, “Although parents may grapple with lost dreams, over time positive adaptations can occur in the form of changed world views concerning life and disability, and an appreciation of the positive contributions made by children to family members and society as a whole. Parents’ experiences indicate the importance of hope and of seeing possibilities that lie ahead.”

One parent rejoiced and opened her heart by telling her circle of parent-friends, “I was just thinking about all the reasons I am ticked that my child is autistic and then thought, you know, if autism had not happened to our family I would not have learned so many things! So many people I would have never known! I believe it has taught me courage beyond words…As much as I hate it, it has made me a better person and better parent to my child. Anyone here feel as though you were helped on some level by this diagnosis?” She received an avalanche of glowing responses.

I have yet to meet a person with autism who has not in some capacity declared their desire to give back of themselves, to share their gifts, and to teach others. In their gentle way—as befits their nature—people with autism compel us to higher standards of deference and respect for humanity. Being present with the autistic individual requires us to be calm and refrain, to be silent and truly listen. What do you suppose people with autism have indicated they’re here to teach? The most salient themes of the human experience: tolerance, patience, sensitivity, compassion, and, of course, unconditional love. These themes consistently emerge in my work as a consultant no matter where I go.
We need people with autism in the numbers with which they’ve increased, especially if we’re to unite in a renaissance for what is right and true and good and kind. It is coming. And the next major human rights movement to shatter myths and tear down walls of hate will be lead by those meek of voice but strong of will.
