Your Inner Muse to Creative Thinking

Humanity is entering a new era. “In this new decade, we are moving into a new Age of Enlightenment. The Aquarian information from the gods can no longer be contained, the Divine Feminine is being released in all her glory and we will once again see a Renaissance period, where great art, architecture, philosophy, literature and science will develop and flourish. During this decade the greatest minds will stir, to share, to illuminate and to build and create works and ideas that will be marveled around the world.” — Kala Ambrose

It’s time to dream again, to open our minds to the creative source and allow our inner muse to stir to action.  Do you struggle with creativity, feeling as if you’ve run out of ideas or were you once told that you weren’t very creative?  Columnist Michael Michalko, author of Creative Thinkering: Putting your Imagination to Work, presents his view in a recent issue of Psychology Today.  He shares “Twelve Things You Were Not Taught in School about Creative Thinking.”  It’s difficult not to feel positively inspired after reading this article! Try it for yourself and see if you don’t feel the urge to stir up your creative juices and try something new!

Creativity and the Divine Feminine Fire

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Teri Degler, author/co-author of ten non-fiction books, including The Fiery Muse: Creativity and the Spiritual Quest and the topic of our discussion today – The Divine Feminine Fire; Creativity and Your Yearning to Express Your Self.

Kala: Teri, you write about the divine feminine energy and how it gives ‘creative expression to the innermost depth of our being’. What was your inspiration in writing this book and what did you most wish to express?

Teri: The inspiration for the book came from a number of sources, but at the deepest level I think it was my own personal experience with the divine feminine and how this has influenced my life.  In my life I have had what were – at least to me – very profound spiritual experiences. These experiences were for me – and I eventually learned for many others – extremely visceral. Even though they were essentially “spiritual” experiences they were very much “in the body”. Every time I had one of these experiences it triggered an outpouring of creative expression. But it also filled me with a deep yearning – a yearning to try to be a better person, to know God, to help others, to help save Mother Earth.  Because these experiences had such a physical, body-based element I got very interested in yoga. Then, I was absolutely captivated by the fact that the ancient yogis said that mystical experiences, inspired creativity, and becoming an increasingly “spiritual” person were all connected and all triggered by the divine feminine.

Kala: The book covers spiritual traditions which you describe as …” Amongst these traditions are hatha yoga and Tantra, both of which speak of the cosmic force known as Shakti – or kundalini-shakti – seen as the energy that propels evolution. As such, Shakti works not just out in the world but within each one of us, where she transforms, enlightens, and carries us along the spiritual path. Parallels to this idea can also be found in the sacred writings of Christianity on Sophia, or divine Wisdom, and in Judaism on Shekinah, the feminine face of God”.  Can you describe to our readers to concept of Shakti and how it works in each of us?

Teri: There is just not a quick answer to this! In the branch of Hinduism that yoga comes from Shakti is seen as the creatrix of the universe. God – the One, the Absolute – is seen as being beyond gender, but when God yearns to bring the universe into being the first thing it creates is masculine “principle”.  This masculine principle is pure consciousness; it absolutely still and completely unmoving. Nothing moves! Nothing happens! (Pretty boring!) So then God brings feminine principle into being; this is the active principle. This is Shakti. She is power, energy – in fact, shakti means energy in Sanskrit. She is the creative principle, the creative force of the universe. As soon as she comes into being, she begins to create the universe out of herself – in other words, out of energy.

Her job is then to propel the created universe along its evolutionary path. She also embodies herself in each and every human. In this “embodied” form she is known as kundalini-shakti or simply kundalini. Many of your readers are probably familiar the idea that kundalini is an energy that rests at the base of the spine and travels upwards through the chakras when awakened to bring about Enlightenment. But in a broader sense, kundalini is the life energy in us, and her job it to propel each one of along our evolutionary path — the path of spiritual growth.

Ultimately, this path does lead to this Realization of Oneness – but the important thing for us to realize is that for most of us it is a very gradual process. As this divine feminine energy becomes increasingly active in us, we often begin to have brief moments when we are filled with divine love, periods when we are filled with inspired creativity, and little glimpses of the oneness of all things. This realization of oneness triggers, in turn, a yearning to help those who are suffering, to right wrongs, and/or to save Mother Earth…. I believe that having this type of yearning is a sign that Shakti, in her guise as kundalini, is actively working in us. And this is happening to more and more of us because this a time of transformation and change…

Kala: Your previous book was The Fiery Muse and now we have The Divine Feminine Fire. During this progression of your writing, were you aware of the energy building and transforming, from the muses and creativity into a more active phase now with the Divine Feminine? What has surprised you the most during your journey of writing both these books?

Teri: My understanding of the divine feminine has certainly changed, but the “fiery muse” was just a way of introducing the concept of a powerful transformative force that was responsible for both inspired creativity and mystical experience.

What has surprised me most is that, although the ancient yogis may have described it in more detail, this transformative spiritual force is written about in every spiritual tradition.  For instance, in the Christianity and Judaism it is the Holy Spirit or Holy Wind, in Taoism it is jeng chi, in Tibetan Buddhism it is dumo fire. The natives of the South Sea Islands called it mana.

That these spiritual “energies” all essentially the same thing, is supported by the fact that the saints and mystics of these traditions all describe their mystical experiences in very similar, sometimes almost identical, terms. This is true, too, of ordinary people like you and me. We having similar spiritual experiences – they are not as “huge” as those the great mystics have had, but their essence is the same…

Kala: What do you believe that the Divine Feminine Presence and Fire is bringing to humanity at this time?  How can women connect more with the Divine Feminine energy to enhance their lives?

Teri: I think I answer the first part in the questions above. The answer to the second is by simply following whatever spiritual or humanitarian practice you are drawn to. My teacher, Gopi Krishna, used to say that the best way to awaken the spiritual energy in our lives was to live a simple, balance life, follow the basic tenets of your religion, and spend an hour a day in service to humankind.  Being of service is called karma yoga.

Kala: Many patriarchal religions have eliminated the Goddess/Divine Feminine from their belief systems. Do you feel that there will be a return to understanding and embracing the Goddess?

Teri: Absolutely, I think it is happening right now!

Kala: Teri, thank you for joining me here on Kala’s Quick Five. More about Teri and her book can be found at her website: www.teridegler.com

Enlightenment Gift Number 12 – The Gift of Hope

Faith, Hope and Charity, is it possible that one small gift could give the recipient all of these things and more? In a world where what makes the news on a daily and hourly basis is the reporting of the failures and shadow side of humanity, we’ve lost our perspective on what is real in daily life. The fact is, on most any given day, something terribly devastating won’t happen to you and if that day does come, there are enlightened, compassionate human beings who stand ready to be of service and gather at your side.

With this thought in mind dear readers, we’ve reached the last and perhaps most important gift in our 12 Gifts of Enlightenment Series, which is: Give the Gift of Hope.

The Health Arts Network at Duke (HAND)  holds a vision of integrating the arts with healthcare and has been accomplishing this mission since 1978, offering literary, visual and performing arts to staff, visitors, patients and their families. HAND is recognized nationally as being one of most comprehensive hospital arts programs in the United States. On the HAND website, Kevin Sowers, CEO of Duke University Hospital states, ‘As we think to the future of the delivery of healthcare, more and more, we will be faced with the challenges of further understanding the mind, body and spirit connection. The arts draw on all three pieces; the mind, body and spirit. I believe advancement of our understanding of psycho-neuroimmunology and the impact and influence of the arts on healing and well-being will be an important component of the future of the delivery of healthcare’.

Offering an admirable array of services, HAND has an Artist in Residence program, where professional musicians perform at patient bedsides and waiting areas, maintains an inventory of over 2000 original artworks through the medical center, including placing original art in patient rooms, and features a touchable art gallery collection, accessible to children who are awaiting eye surgery.

Readily apparent at HAND is the outpouring of compassion and love in these programs. As a writer, I was particularly drawn to a program called the Write for You Literary Art program. Led by Grey Brown, the Literary Arts Coordinator for HAND, the program provides free journals to oncology patients, patients receiving bone marrow transplants, psychiatric care patients, high risk pregnancy mothers on long term bed rest, cardiology patients, recipients of organ transplants, family members of patients, and patients referred to the program by care givers. The program provides patients with the journals and organizes group sessions to write and read poetry and offers participants the opportunity to share their journaling if they feel comfortable doing so. According to Grey Brown, many patients are in long term care, spending their days in the hospital. One example of a therapeutic group exercise is ‘seasonal journaling’, which allows patients who are indoors to connect with nature and the seasons through their writings,  sharing their emotions and memories with others.

The program reports that the journals can help patients and their families reduce stress, explore feelings they have associated with both their illness and their healing journey, express gratitude, track physical and emotional changes on a daily basis, make notes to discuss regarding their health care, record personal feelings, fears and prayers, as well as track their medications and treatment schedules.

When speaking with Grey Brown, what I felt strongly was that the journals offered the gift of hope. There is a power in writing and in sharing and expressing those thoughts with others. For many people, journaling allows them to step out of the fray and connect with their thoughts as they physically engage in the act of writing them down. During this process, the writing releases the emotions and allows for a healing process to begin. I asked Grey, who has run this program since 1998, why she chooses to do this work, for certainly, it takes strong character and an open heart to work with patients who are dealing with life threatening illness on such a personal level. Her reply was, ‘I’m doing what I know to do, I have an ease in the hospital, it makes me happy. What I love about the patients is that they are living in the moment, it’s a privilege for me to be in their midst’. Grey, who is also a poet, began the program offering journals to the pediatric bone marrow transplant patients and families and since then it has spread to serve the six other organizations mentioned above. Her future plans for the program include expanding to community settings creating groups which combine poetry, journaling and healing as well as providing journals to hospice programs.

HAND’s  Write for You journal program, is in need of your help. In the past, some publishers donated journals to the program, but with the decline of the economy hitting the publishing industry very hard, HAND is no longer receiving journals from the publishing industry. If the spirit calls to you, Give the Gift of Hope, contact Grey Brown at HAND and send a journal to their program or a donation to purchase journals. The very journal you send today, can be in someone’s hands tomorrow, bringing peace, comfort, and hope. Let’s change the news and change the world, one step at a time. Share the news with others about HAND and encourage friends, co-workers and groups to participate and send in journals and donations and lend a helping hand. In the words of my favorite poet, Maya Angelou, ‘I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver’.

Gentle readers, as we draw to the closing of the 12 Gifts of Enlightenment, my wish is that these gifts have encouraged you to try some of them in your daily lives as well as offered inspiration as gift ideas for the metaphysically inclined people in your life. May the new year bring you great blessings and joy.
