Reclaiming the Divine Masculine

diana_harrisIn June, we celebrate Father’s Day. It is the perfect time to explore the Divine Masculine and the concept of “sacred marriage”. From a spiritual perspective, it is auspicious that Father’s Day and many marriages occur during the astrological cycle of Gemini. The sign of Gemini is depicted as the twins – the one becomes two. Metaphorically, Gemini represents the “sacred union of creative opposites”. Gemini, therefore, serves as our guide on the path to Unity.

The Divine Masculine desires to be re-awakened within each of us. In indigenous societies, the original aspect of the Divine Masculine or the Warrior was very much revered. He was the beloved consort of the Feminine and walked in balance with her. The Green Man and Mother Earth are an example. Both the feminine and masculine aspects of the Divine were viewed as equal in spirit, intelligence, and importance. In the physical and emotional areas, they were viewed as complementary.

The Divine Masculine was then and is spiritually self-aware, secure in his power, both tender and wise, and is outwardly creative. He embodies the qualities of courage, healthy assertion, focused will, structure, strength, balance, and perseverance. In those societies, he was venerated as the seeker, the discoverer, and the creator of something greater than himself. Never were the energies of destruction and reckless use of power associated with him. In some cultures, individuals that behaved in that manner were considered “mad”. It was unspeakable and brought shame to the family and the tribe.

A new paradigm later emerged based upon patriarchal monotheistic perspectives. This standard displaced the original teachings, resulting in a disconnect between the masculine and the feminine. Osho spoke about the effects of this lingering consciousness in our lives today:

“The ordinary man is living a very abnormal life, because his values are upside down. Money is more important than meditation; logic is more important than Love; mind is more important than Heart; power over others is more important than Power over one’s own Being. Mundane things are more important than finding some Treasures which death cannot destroy.”

Today, our men, women, and children suffer the ramifications of that paradigm shift.  We carry the memories and pain of those decisions in our physical and spiritual DNA. It is a “collective wounding” and “identity crisis” which calls out to be balanced, forgiven, and healed. The feminine principles have been made subservient to the patriarchal paradigm of masculine power. The wisdom of the heart and the feminine qualities of receptivity, instinctual wisdom, relating, and compassion have been relegated to imply weakness. This creates shame in women and men that express those qualities. The true nature of the Divine Masculine has also been repressed. The phrase “Be a Man” is sometimes a tool used to shame our boys and men into not showing who they are or how they feel.  How are they to forge healthy relationships with others or know themselves, if they are programmed to deny rather than express their true natures? How are we to let them know that they are loved if they are programmed to invalidate their feelings? Kent Nerburn in his book, Letters to My Son advised:

“Do not fall prey to the false belief that mastery and domination are synonymous with manliness.”

Because all of us are both the masculine and feminine, are the alternatives for our girls and women any clearer? Are they to emulate “Be a Man”, as well? Or, are their options still invisibility or servitude in various guises? Although strides have been made toward healing these attitudes -there is more work to be done. Until we address this fundamental issue, we exist outside our Divine Potential – disconnected from our true nature and purpose. Humanity has the ability to grow beyond this wound. Within each of us, is the potential of great beauty, passion, and commitment, which is animated by the Divine.

It is time to bring an end to an “error”. Moreover, it is time to reclaim the Divine Feminine and reunite her with the Divine Masculine — first within ourselves individually, then in the outer world. This unification of the Self is one of the highest messages of Gemini and clearly identifies that the “sacred marriage” is an evolution of consciousness. The Divine Masculine seeks his beloved consort, the Feminine. She holds the space of Love and Compassion and holds the power of creation from within. He seeks to bring form to their creation, which reflects Love and Harmony to the outer world.
