Kala Ambrose and Elizabeth Harper teaching about Auras, Chakras and Energy Anatomy at the Omega Institute June 2011

Some of the tools we used during the workshop included wands, bells, crystals and gemstones
Next week I’ll share with you the magic of what happened while we were at the
Village of LilyDale
How do I even begin to express my gratitude

to all of the wonderful people I spent time with

this Summer on my Gypsy Wagon Road Trip

tour of the Northeast. So much happened every day

that there’s so much to share!

At the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY,
I taught with my dear friend Elizabeth Harper
as we united our magic and energy together
to share Energy Anatomy: Exploring and
Healing Your Aura and Chakras.
We had the great fortune to be placed in an
octagon building this year at Omega, which is used
throughout the year by shamans.
Octagon shaped building with skylights
at Omega
The energy of this building was phenomenal
and served to
intensify every exercise we did together as
a group
during the weekend.
I have two favorite
memories
of this weekend which are:

On Saturday afternoon, I was teaching
an ancient
Egyptian Mystery School ritual on
how to surround
your aura with white light energy and
then how to
expand your aura so that you can raise
its energy and
power. As I held my arms in the air,
drawing the
energy from above, the wind stirred and
the skies
opened and the rain came pouring down.
It was a
beautiful moment as we connected with
the natural
elements and the higher realms.
My second favorite moment was on
Sunday morning
as Elizabeth was leading our group in
meditation.
All weekend we had been joined by woodland
forest
animals around our building, hedgehogs, squirrels,
and birds greeted us through the day.
As Elizabeth
continued with the meditation, I felt a stirring
of the
energy in the forest around us. I opened my
eyes to
look at the windows surrounding us in the
room,
to see three birds at the window who were
flapping
their wings so that they stayed airborne,
but at the
same time, could join us at the window and
be a part
of the energy. The Divine was with us
in every
moment, truly magical!

Full Moon Magic

Ancient MidSummer Rituals from Kala

While some choose to spend their days complaining about the weather, I embrace all of its changes and seasons as gifts provided to us by this beautiful world.
It’s been very hot here where I live in North Carolina, breaking records on some days even, but it’s mid July and tis the season. One of the side effects of the heat is that we can connect with this energy and use it to “burn away” any negative energy or feelings that we have been holding on to this year.
The following is a two-part ancient ritual, which works best during the Full Moon of July, which is also referred to as the “Thunder Moon”.
This ritual can be conducted on Thursday, July 14th or Friday, July 15th

Begin with Sunlight

To begin, go outside in the heat and spend a few moments in the sunlight. Not too long, you don’t want to get sunburned, but rather just a few minutes. While soaking in the Sun, absorb the heat and ask to be filled with the Pure Light of the Sun. As the light and heat surround your body, breathe in deeply and picture the energy and light coming into your body and filling you with pure white light, both healing and transformative.

Each time you exhale your breath, blow the air through your mouth. Visualize releasing any negative energy or thoughts that you have been holding on to, allowing them float away from your body. As they are released into the light, they are burned away into nothingness by the light and are removed from your aura and energy bodies.

Full Moon Magic

This evening, sit comfortably where the light of the full moon can shine upon your body. You can sit inside as long as the light of the moon will reach you by coming through a window.

Next, light a small white candle and fill a silver bowl with water. Place the bowl in front of you where you can gaze into the water.  Allow the moonlight to also shine across the water.  When ready, surround yourself with protective white light and and then ask to see by the light of the moon and the element of water what the future brings for you during the second half of this year. Then focus on a positive manifestation that you would like to create in the next six months. Direct this energy through your body into your fingertip and dip your finger into the bowl of water. Visualize the energy entering the water and then connecting with the moonlight, rising then on moonbeams to carry your message into the higher realms.

– note: If you were unable to spend time in the sunlight earlier today, then light a gold or yellow candle and asked to be filled with the pure light of the Sun while releasing any negative energy before conducting the moon ritual.

Dogs, Cats and Dolphins Living Together in Harmony

Every day brings opportunity for love

One of my favorite movies of all time is Ghost Busters, I’ve seen the movie so many times that I can quote most every line from the movie!  One that sticks with me often is when Bill Murray is trying to explain to the Mayor that a “disaster of biblical proportions” is about to hit the city. To make his point, he exclaims “… cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria.” This movie always makes me smile and I watch it at least once a year.

It’s all too easy to get caught up in everything that is happening our world today and no doubt, there is plenty to get caught up in.  There are entire businesses and news organizations focused on capturing our attention and making us tune in to find out what epic event will cause the next mass hysteria next in the world. What I think that is important at this time, is to remember that the best thing we can all do is breathe, relax, and do the best that we can each day. If you feel called to reach out and help an organization or charity to help others around the world, do so. If you feel called to pray and send energy to help others around the world, do so. If you feel called to help one person in your community, do so. The point is to stay out of a negative cycle of worry and to take action and do what you are capable and able to do in your world.

Many people write to me and say that they feel helpless, that they don’t know how to help right now when so much is occurring world-wide. I suggest that they consider what they can do within their reach and to do so with all of their heart to the best of their intentions. Each positive action in this aspect creates a ripple effect and each person makes a difference in the energy they share in this world with their thoughts, words, actions and deeds.

I remind them of the story by Loren Eisley which says… One day a man was walking along the beach when he observed a young boy picking up starfish and gently tossing them back into the ocean.   A storm had just blown through and the waves had washed up hundreds of starfish who are now stuck on the sandy shore.  The man walks up to boy and asks him what he is doing, the boy replies, the tide is going out and if I don’t throw these starfish back into the sea, they will die.  The man then attempts to “educate” the young boy, by saying.. “Boy, you are wasting your time, can’t you see that there are hundreds of starfish here on the beach. You can’t make a difference.” The boy politely listens to the man and then picks up another starfish and gently tosses it into the ocean. The he smiles at the man and says, “See, I made a difference for that one.”

My thought for the day is: “Don’t be overwhelmed by what you can’t do, be inspired by what you can do”  and if you want to know more about ancient wisdom and life altering lessons, visit my mystery school, The Temple of Stella Maris

Life is good and there is joy to be found in each moment. Today I leave you with this wonderful video of Cats and Dolphins loving each other and enjoying the moment! Much love to you! *~Kala~*

Transformational Tips for Spring

The Spring Equinox, also known as the first day of Spring, arrives on the official date of March 20th 2011 at 7:21pm EDT.  That’s not a moment too soon for me, as it’s been a long cold winter and I’m ready for a change in the weather. From a spiritual perspective, the Spring Equinox marks a seasonal cycle of rebirth, where the seeds planted in the Fall, (a quiet period of self-introspection and reflection), blossom into creative and colorful displays.

As Mother Nature works her magic, there are tremendous boosts of natural energy presented to us during the Spring and Fall Equinox and the Summer and Winter Solstices. The energy lasts for three days: the day before, equinox or solstice day, and the day after. When we understand this transformational energy, which bursts forth in Spring, we can use this energy as a motivator in order to create great change in our lives.

There is an old teaching I share with my students which says: “We can not fully understand what we have not experienced”. In order to transform, we must first consider what we have learned through our past experience. This allows us to turn this information into wisdom and enhance who we are and who we wish to become.

Through our life experiences, we develop the wisdom to answer such questions and learn and grow from each experience in our lives. By doing this, we honor the people and experiences who have impacted us in our life. In honoring these things, we make them sacred and of great personal value. It is with this knowledge, that we can change our future. This occurs by first focusing our attention on what we truly desire to manifest. Then we must then actively create the right atmosphere and attitude to bring the desire to fruition.

Then during the Spring Equinox, we can create a new beginning. We are given the opportunity, just as we see in nature, to bloom and begin again. This is one example of the greatest gifts we were given here on earth, which is the abundant, creative and transforming energy found in nature.

Ancient schools once taught how to observe the powerful events occurring in nature to connect with the energy here on earth. We still have this ability to connect with nature in order to assist with our growth and development and cultivate balance and growth. I’m happy to present here a series of transforming activities for the three-day period of the Equinox.

The Equinox ritual consists of two parts, the outward celebration and the inner rebirth.

Day One of the Equinox

It’s time for Spring Cleaning. Clean your house and remove clutter. As you clean each room and the items in it, do so with reverence and appreciation for the abundance in your life. Cover your home in loving energy as you clean, picturing you and your loved ones in each room, feeling happy, content, joyful and relaxed. By this evening, you are ready to smudge each room with white sage to purify and cleanse each room.

On The Eve of the Equinox

Reflect upon the thoughts and goals you had during the Fall Equinox and for the New Year. Consider the lessons and experiences of the past six months and decide what is hindering progress with your goals.

Ask yourself — What important seeds of truth need to be revealed this spring, in order for me to truly know myself so that I may blossom into my power-filled being?

It’s time to awaken from your period of hibernation, inactivity and self-introspection and put these thoughts and plans into action!

To awaken to your higher self and activate your growth cycle, begin the Equinox ritual by taking a shower. As the water flows over your body, imagine all negative thoughts leaving your mind, being washed away from you. As you dry off, say out loud,All That Happens, Happens for Good – Divine Spring Energy is working through me now”!

Day Two of the Equinox

This day is what people refer to as “Equinox Day”, It is the day to Celebrate Rebirth, Renewal and Abundance. It is a time to toast to plans of action and growth, as you are becoming “a garden in bloom”!

Celebrate with rituals including creating and sharing Spring Equinox gift baskets with loved ones and friends. The day culminates with dinner to celebrate renewal, rebirth and the magic of the seasons and life and all the wonder it brings, along with sharing dreams being brought into fruition this year. This is a powerful day to put plans into action.

In ancient times, Spring Equinox was celebrated with an outward and inward celebration:

  • Outwardly – people celebrated with egg hunts, (a symbol of the earth and rebirth), by giving and decorating with bunnies, (a universal symbol of fertility for both body – act of creation with birth and mind – turning thoughts into fruition) and by giving baskets, (a symbol of abundance). A special dinner with family and friends is also common to celebrate the return of Spring and renewal.
  • Inwardly – people took action on the seeds (goals) that they planted during the Fall Equinox. Spring presented the time and divine opportunity to step forward and create oneself anew with the tools of Gratitude, Abundance and Creativity.

Day Three of the Equinox

Celebrate the renewal of Spring and the Divine Feminine energy which is present everywhere in nature at this season. This is the time to emerge from Introspection and Self Observation, into Spring Renewal and Focus on Action, Creation and Celebration.

Here are some suggestions to activate your creative side and bring new perspective and balance into your life.

Plant flowers in the garden,

Take on a new creative project (preferably something new you have not done before)

Decorate your home in bright new colors

Have Gratitude for the ABUNDANCE of OPPORTUNITY in your life

Accept new challenges in order to grow and step closer to your goals

Embrace the future by spending time with people in your life who will encourage your dreams and aspirations.

The Spring Equinox is a great time to jump start your goals, but this ritual can be done anytime in Spring for wonderful and positive results. It has never made real sense with our current Julian calendar, that one would create New Year resolutions in the dead of winter on January 1st. Your dreams were planted as seeds of thought in the Fall and now is time to tend to your garden and bring forth beautiful blooms of creativity. You haven’t failed at your New Year Resolutions, You’ve Only Just Begun!

Decide what actions you will take immediately and proceed from there. May the journey into the transformative sacred garden of Spring grow in delight with each step!

Investigating the Poltergeist Phenomenon

The Poltergeist Phenomenon by Michael Clarkson

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Michael Clarkson, a non-fiction author and professional speaker who has spent 37 years as a print journalist, winning numerous awards for his investigative pieces, including the Canadian National Newspaper Award twice. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his story about reclusive author J. D. Salinger, who he met twice in New Hampshire. Clarkson has also been a sports reporter interviewing famous athletes such as basketball legend Michael Jordan and golfer Tiger Woods.   The topic of discussion today is Clarkson’s new book – The Poltergeist Phenomenon: An in-depth investigation into floating beds, smashing glass, and other unexplained disturbances.

Kala: Michael, welcome to Kala’s Quick Five. What led you to write about poltergeists, did you experience the phenomena personally or do you just have an interest in the field?

Michael: The topic has interested me for a long time, even before 1980 when a 21-year-old man, who had been the center of a case came to my house in Niagara Falls, Ontario, to talk about his experience. Since then, I have been following with increasing interest as such cases in the media and in scholarly publications. During the past five years, I have been closely examining 75 cases, many of which appear in my book. I have also experienced unusual occurrences of the flight-or-fight system in sports and in deadline writing. I believe fight-or-flight is one component in poltergeist activity, although it is hard to prove.

Kala: In your words, how would you define a poltergeist and how does it differ from other paranormal activity?

Michael: I think there is a rational, although rare and mysterious, explanation for poltergeist activity; I think it revolves around haunted people, not haunted places.

In the 75 cases I reviewed, I found many trends (although each case has its own characteristics and idiosyncrasies) The cases generally have:

·      Events such as unexplained knocking, electrical malfunctions and movement of objects and furniture.

·      A poltergeist agent, usually an adolescent entering puberty, immediately around whom the strange activities occur. He or she is usually quite intelligent.

·      Repression or frustration of the poltergeist agent by others in a home.

·      High levels of stress in the household, prior to the start of the poltergeist activity and continuing through the case.

·      A mischievous or destructive intent on the part of the agent, rather than a downright malevolent intent, although about a dozen people have been injured, but none seriously, in the cases in this book.

·      A life span for a case of one week to several months.

Just how the agents make things move is a matter of speculation, but they often have unique brains and perhaps subconsciously tap into nearby energy sources, such as electricity, geomagnetic storms and the human mind/body.

Kala: In my work as a paranormal researcher, the poltergeist case which has always captured my interest is the Bell Witch in Tennessee.  Can you describe some of your most favorite and well documented poltergeist cases?

Michael:

·      In St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1970, an entire shift of police officers reported – over two weeks time –  dynamic events revolving around an 11-year-old boy. They reported that chairs moved, paintings fell off walls, the boy was thrown off a chair numerous time and a hardboiled sergeant who, according to a fellow officer, was “sitting in a chair when he was tipped on his ass.” The occurrences lasted two weeks and to this day no cheating has been reported and the boy has kept his identity secret in his hometown.

·      In a middle-class home on Long Island, New York, in 1958, Detective Joseph Tozzi, one of the most respected detectives in the Nassau County Police Department, said he was hit in the back of the legs by a flying bronze horse, weighing nearly 100 pounds, while he was walking down basement steps with a 13-year-old boy. Many other witnesses claimed to see startling events, which lasted more than four weeks.

·      In a Miami warehouse in 1967, police officers, newspaper reporters, television crews and insurance agents claimed they saw cowbells, ashtrays, key chains and rubber daggers fly or fall off shelves, sometimes at unusual angles and always while a 19-year-old shipping clerk was nearby.

·      In  1974 in the home of a factory worker in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Officer John Holsworth swore he saw a heavy refrigerator “lift slowly off the floor, turn and then set down again. No one else was around, and then the big TV set seemed to float in the air and crashed to the floor.”

·      In a house in London, England, in 1977, Constable Carolyn Keeps said she became a witness to a chair moving three or four feet, apparently without the help of human hands. Also in England in 1952, police say they were witnesses, and also the victims, of strange incidents in Runcorn, in which a quiet, 17-year-old apprentice draftsman was said to cause dressing tables and other things to move with his mind over a 10-week period.

Kala: Describe what you found with the evidence of PK (psycho kinesis), which is the ability to move things with the mind, that correlated with ongoing poltergeist activity?

Michael: Evidence for RSPK (poltergeist activity) and PK is fleeting and not conclusive, although witness evidence is strong, especially with at least 51 police officers who have reported RSPK over the years.

A Canadian woman in her forties, who wants to keep her identity secret, says RSPK happens when her husband gets her upset – to the point that even heavy appliances can move. She is disturbed by her powers and is trying to channel them by moving a homemade pinwheel with her mind, which she did for me in a Skype interview recently. The woman is being tested off and on by neuroscientist Dr. Michael Persinger and parapsychologist William Roll.

Unfortunately, funds for such research are being cut and many university laboratories have closed in recent years.

Kala: Michael, I served for several years on the board of the Rhine Research Center, which is the organization founded by J.B. Rhine, (his research into ESP and paranormal activity is legendary). During that time, I had the opportunity to meet and interact with William (Bill) Roll. If I had to say who is one of the best experts in the field, Bill Roll would be at the top of my list. Who would make your list as the best paranormal experts, parapsychologists and researchers in this field?

Michael: Yes, William Roll is the foremost expert, perhaps of all time, regarding poltergeists. He is semi-retired in Georgia. Stephen Mera of Manchester, England, is another respected parapsychologist, along with American Andrew Nichols and Brit Malcolm Robinson. Unfortunately, several top ones have died in recent years – D. Scott Rogo, Maurice Grosse and Andrew Green.

Give the gift that offers a lifetime of memories

Sample Quilt from Campus Quilts

Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Birthdays, Baby Showers, Weddings, Bridal Showers, Christmas, Hannukah, what do they all have in common? With each holiday that arises through the year, the quest is always the same, finding the perfect gift for a loved one, which will express our love, our appreciation and our gratitude.

There’s always the old standby’s, candy, chocolate, cards, and one of my favorites, flowers. These all serve as great starter gifts, sort of the prelude to the presentation, addendums to the big reveal!

It’s at this point, that we long to find the gift that will last a lifetime. Even better, we want to find a gift that is so unique and directly related to the person in question, that no one else in the world will have this gift.

It sounds like a quest from a fairy tale, to find such a gift, yet dear readers, I have found this gift and am in love with it!

The gift is… a quilt, made from tee-shirts formerly worn by the intended recipient throughout their lifetime. Each tee shirt reflects a special memory from their life and they now have these shirts gathered to display in their quilt, while also having them in the form of a soft, warm, comforting wrap to snuggle up in and in the future, share with their children.

The possibilities are as endless as your imagination. Sports themed quilts, school shirts from elementary school through college, team building quilts from your company, photo quilts, family reunion generational quilts, favorite vacation memories, sorority quilts, the list goes on!

I recently designed a quilt for my son, having saved all of his shirts from his school years as well as tee shirts from special vacations and places we’ve visited and other shirts which were special to him.  Once I decided that I wanted a quilt to be made, then came the search for the right company to put the quilt together. I researched for several months to determine the company that I thought would  be the right one to handle my precious cargo. It’s a big deal to make this decision, as once you ship those shirts off to a company, you are putting years of memories into their hands, which would be extremely difficult if impossible to replace.  I’m delighted to say that I found the perfect company who exceeded all of my expectations in their work and I highly recommend them. The company is Campus Quilt.  The Campus Quilt Company has been featured on The Today Show, The Rachael Ray Show, and in Real Simple. Their work is extraordinary, recently ESPN gave their t-shirt quilts to the celebrities at the ESPY awards show and the orders continue to roll in from others every day.

From the first step of ordering with Campus Quilt, they are so helpful and guide you through the process. Examples are given of quilt sizes so that you can determine which size quilt and how many shirts you will need for your order. Once you place your order, they mail you a package with instructions on how to prepare your shirts, along with a bag to ship the shirts to them. They also include a large sample of cloths for you to touch and compare with your shirts to determine the right color and fabric to use as the backing for your quilt and for sashing.  I appreciated this tremendously as it allowed me to take my time and find just the right color that I wanted for the quilt.

The end result was phenomenal. It truly is the most unique and special gift that can only be created once in a lifetime. My son loves his quilt and it has become quite the conversation piece as the family enjoys talking about the various teeshirts on the quilt and remembering the special memories.

Want to give a gift of warmth, love and memories of a lifetimes? Nothing tops a personalized tee shirt quilt from the Campus Quilt Company.  I plan to order from them again and again as their customer service and the quality of the quilt exceeded all my expectations. The quilting is as good as back when my dear grandmother made quilts (with stitching throughout the entire quilt) and the customer service made me feel like family.

Vist Campus Quilt Company and discover what memories you can create today. If you order a quilt from them, I’d love to hear from you and see a photo of the finished product. Share with me on here.

Here’s to family, friends and cherished memories to last a lifetime.

Are you a fan of tropical or sidereal? Exploring Astrology…

Mercury the Messenger

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Raphael Simons, a psychic reader, astrologer (Western and Chinese forms) and feng shui expert. Raphael is the best selling author of Feng Shui, Step by Step, Feng Shui Strategies for Business Success: Arranging Your Office for Success and Prosperity, and The Feng Shui of Love. Raphael’s books on Feng Shui have sold worldwide and been translated into over twelve languages. Read Raphael’s blog here.

Kala: Raphael, a good portion of the world recently embraced a news report which stated that western astrology is wrong and off on their calculations roughly about a month. As well, the report stated that there are 13 astrological zodiac signs, rather than the current twelve. What’s your take on this report?

Raphael: It is a big confusion between ideas on sidereal astrology and tropical astrology. Sidereal astrology is based on ideas of divisions of the constellations. An example of this kind of astrology is Hindu astrology. The Hindu astrology has a system of signs that are approximations of constellations, and these signs/constellations follow the precession of the equinoxes. The precession of the equinoxes is the affect of the earth’s tilt. It takes approximately 27000 years for the entire cycle of the precession to be completed. What this does is causes the vernal equinox to slip backwards little by little through the constellations every year. Where we are currently is in the far end of Pisces going backwards into Aquarius. In other words, we are coming from the age of Pisces into the age of Aquarius. There is no consensus of opinion exactly when this occurs.

Tropical astrology, which is the standard form of Western astrology, is based on the Zodiac. The Zodiac is named after the constellations, but it is not measured by the constellations and never drifts. Vernal equinox in tropical astrology is always 0 degrees Aries. In sidereal astrology it is claimed that the vernal equinox happens somewhere in Pisces. We must not confuse the two systems. Tropical astrology is based in mathematics and geometry. It starts the zodiac at the point where the ecliptic, or Sun’s path intersects the earth’s equator on it’s northbound course. The ecliptic is the Sun’s apparent path in relation to the earth. Vernal equinox is when the Sun crosses the equator going North. Fall equinox is when the Sun crosses the equator going South. Summer solstice is the northernmost reach of the Sun’s path. Winter solstice is the southernmost point of the Sun’s path. The ecliptic in Tropical astrology is divided into 12 divisions, 30 degrees each. And these 12 divisions are called the zodiac signs. All of the planets travel along the ecliptic path along with the Sun and Moon. Tropical astrology is a perfect system based in ancient theories of harmonics, mathematical ratios and geometry. It should not be confused with ideas of sidereal astrology. Tropical works. There is no 13th sign.

Kala: You’re a chinese astrologer as well as a western astrologer. Do you connect with one more than the other? What are the biggest differences between chinese and western astrology?

Raphael: I like both systems. I use both, and enjoy them. They both amplify one another when seen side by side, but I have no preference.

Kala: Raphael, what do you think this means for consciousness on a global scale at this time? I’m surprised and shocked to see so many people who have taken the opinion of one astronomer as fact and are declaring that they are a new zodiac sign. They don’t appear to question the information or the fact that astrology is thousands of years old in practice. What is happening in our world that so many would accept one person’s opinion in a viral internet posting and allow it so quickly to change their beliefs?

Raphael: What I think is that there is a great deal of confusion happening these days. We can see the recent rash of noise about the 13th sign in the lunar eclipse chart of 12/21/10. In it, Venus was square Neptune, Neptune was in the 3rd house. This means that through the news department came a great confabulation of delusional nonsense.

Kala: What’s the future for astrology? Will this publicity raise awareness for astrology or cast a doubting shadow on the practice?

Raphael: I think the publicity was deliberately planted in the media to destroy public belief in astrology. Good astrologers see what the powers that be don’t want the public to see. There is a great deal of dishonest and obscurantist propaganda circulating in the media to keep the people from knowing what is going on. It is in the best interest for astrologers to learn astrology and not fall into these crazy ideas. The future of astrology is probably that it will continue being used and people will continue learning it. It proves itself time and time again to be true, and that is all that matters.

Kala: There are thousands of articles by astrologers with predictions for 2011 by zodiac signs for each person, but it’s rare to see an astrologer who will offer predictions for countries by their birth sign. Some would say the U.S. for example, was born on July 4th, Independence Day, others might say it was the date when the Constitution was signed, others when it was ratified.  Do you offer astrological predictions for countries by their birthdates and if so, what do you see coming for the U.S. in 2011?

Raphael: The birth charts for nations are useful and are a part of mundane astrology. Mundane astrology means astrological world predicting. The more important charts to make in mundane astrology are the charts for the equinoxes and solstices, the new and full moons, solar and lunar eclipses and major planetary configurations as seen over the various capitols of the world. Natal charts for the nations are used as well as charts for currencies and stock market indices. The chart for 7/4/1776 works. It is useful to refer to it in mundane forecasts as it is useful to refer to the natal charts of the other nations. For the UK, for instance, we refer to the chart made for the coronation of William the Conqueror on December 25, 1066 at noon. It always registers events in the UK.

Say What! Did My Zodiac Sign Just Change?

The twelve signs of the Zodiac

A recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune went viral after reporting that because of the earth wobbling on its axis and the moon’s gravitational pull, all signs of the zodiac are off by roughly a month.  According to the article, the ancient Babylonians originally had 13 constellations and later changed them to 12, throwing out Ophiuchus, who is known as the Snake Holder.

The article quoted Minneapolis astronomer and board member of the Minnesota Planetarium Society, Parke Kunkle as saying: “There is no physical connection between constellations and personality traits, said Kunkle, who teaches astronomy at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. “Sure, we can connect harvest to the stars,” he said. “But personality? No.”

There was no report on whether Kunkle has ever studied astrology or conducted any research in this field.

Call in Chicken Little, the sky is falling! Or is it?

Astrology has three main branches which are Chinese astrology, Indian-Vedic astrology and Western astrology. The Mayans and Aztecs both also have a form of astrology, though it is not as widely used as the other three. History records its first form with the ancient Babylonians and it was considered part of astronomy by the Babylonians. Astrology has been used to counsel Kings and Queens and other rulers for thousands of years in Egypt, Greece, India, China, and Europe including with Queen Elizabeth 1 and her famous astrologist John Dee. Astrology has also been prominent in the U.S. with world leaders, including former President Ronald Reagan who consulted with Joan Quigley while he was in the White House. Not just for political leaders, CEO’s and prominent entrepreneurs have sought the counsel of astrologers, including business mogul J.P. Morgan, who is quoted as saying, ‘Anyone can be a millionaire, but to become a billionaire, you need an astrologer.’

Let’s get down to the heart of the matter and find out how this confusion actually occurred with the current misconception about the zodiac and astrology. Why with all this mis-communication, you would think there’s a Mercury Retrograde.

I spoke with Marguerite Manning, an author and professional astrologer. Marguerite’s book, Cosmic Karma: Understanding Your Contract with the Universe, teaches how to study your birth chart in the same way ancient astronomers believed it should be studied – as a universal birth map of your soul’s chosen energies for this lifetime.

Kala: Marguerite, thanks for speaking with me here about this recent report on the astrological signs changing dates and shifting into 13 zodiac signs. What gives here? Can thousands of years of astrology and astrologists around the world be wrong?

Marguerite: Absolutely not Kala, and trust me when I tell you this report is not breaking news to astrologers. In fact, every few years some kind of report comes out to let the world know that the stars “don’t line up anymore” and while I can’t speak for all of my fellow stargazers,  here’s my take on it:

As every astrologer will tell you, due to the Precession Of the Equinox, (which is the name for the gradual backward motion of the outer visible Universe caused by the earth’s “wobble” on its axis) the Sun’s position in the zodiac doesn’t match up to the constellations anymore the way it used to 3,000 years ago when Draconis was our pole star. This means that these days on the first day of Spring, March 21st, the Sun is NOT actually at 00 degrees Aries as it used to be on that date but is actually 24 degrees further back on the ecliptic at about 5 degrees Pisces. Now sidereal astrologers are the astrologers who measure planets against the stars as they are located on the ecliptic today. Tropical astrologers, like myself, measure planetary positions against where the stars use to be on ecliptic, using the seasons instead of the stars as their guidelines. Now believe it or not, even though Tropical astrology is the most common form of astrology, both types of astrologers swear by their systems. However, after years of experimenting with both, the Tropical system is the one I “swear by” and that’s because from my perspective, as a karmic astrologer, there’s a reason the planets do NOT line up with the stars anymore. A reason that the very principles of my book, Cosmic Karma, were based on. The same reason that helped me derive the breakthrough astrological formula for finding the soul’s past in the birth chart: You see I believe we wobble on our axis because the constellations in the outer visible Universe are no longer supposed to reflect the here and now. And while 3000 years ago that’s exactly what they did, I believe that because each one of our souls, like the Universe itself, is evolving, those fixed stars in the constellations now have a different purpose in the natal sky. They are NOT reflecting who we are here to BECOME today (as they use to). They are actually up there reflecting who our soul actually IS as a result of all of our previous yesterdays. In other words, those stars are now illuminating the very specific and evolved individuals we are here to physically BE in this lifetime.

Therefore, and from that perspective, our sun sign doesn’t reflect the energies of what we are here in this life to learn, it reflects what we have already “aced” in our last lives and now have at our disposal to use here in this one…good, bad or fattening. So based on that important principle, (and here it is)….I‘m convinced  the constellations don’t line up to our calendar anymore because the energies they reflect don’t represent today, they represent the past! Our soul’s calendar. Furthermore, based on that principle, the sign placement of every natal planet does the same and represents our soul’s past with that planet‘s energy. For example, our Mars sign (our physical past), our Pluto sign (our past experiences with power), etc. On the other astrological hand, however, the house placement of each natal planet (it’s mathematical relationship to the earth at the time of birth) does represent today because it represents the specific areas of life where our soul promised to use those energies (skills, experience and influence) in this lifetime. In short, today’s human agenda. Again, we always have free choice so whether we choose to use the positive or the negative energies of our Sun sign, Mars sign or Pluto sign, etc., is totally and completely up to us -and of course, the energies we were born under. So the good news is we are all exactly who we thought we were before we heard the latest headlines. Unfortunately, for some of us, that may also be the not-so-good news.

Kala: Who is Ophiuchus, the snake holder and was he ever “in” and why is he “out”?  Many people are now discussing the calendar which revolves around 13 moons and why don’t we have a 13th zodiac sign?

Marguerite:
Again, Kala, Ophiuchus, like the Precession of the Equinox, is not “breaking news” to any astrologer I know. In fact Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy and remains one of the 88 modern constellations today. Located around the celestial equator, it’s name is Greek for ‘serpent-bearer’, and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation it borders, Serpens.

For the astrological record, and despite the “breaking headlines” today, this constellation was NEVER considered to be part of the zodiac belt because when the zodiac was first  invented by the Babylonians 3000 years ago, the Sun did not pass through this sign at all and only moved through the twelve constellations which we still refer to as the zodiac. However, due to the Precession of the Equinox and the slight backward shift of the stars, the Sun does now pass through Ophiuchus for about 17 days each December (from November 30th through December 17th ). Astrologers were always aware of this occurrence yet based on a 1930 constellation boundaries report, only a few 20th century sidereal astrologers considered the sun to actually be in the “sign of Ophiuchus” when it did. Tropical astrologers, on the other hand (as well as most sidereal astrologers), have never recognized Ophiuchus as a legitimate zodiac sign.

Kala: Five years ago, a similar report had sprung up and people were in a panic over the news. Back then in 2006 on the Explore Your Spirit Show, I covered these same questions with a panel of astrologers on my show to explain the confusion. Why does this same conflict continue to arise and why do you think so many people are so quick to jump on the bandwagon and believe one small report versus thousands of years of astrology?

Marguerite: You know Kala, from the beginning of time there have always been people who were unwilling to recognize astrology as a legitimate science and I’m afraid there always will be. I think much of that has to do with the darker status it acquired when the church separated it from the science of astronomy and denounced it as an “occult practice”. Since then it has never really regained the status of “science” or even “metaphysical science” it deserves. The Babylonians are generally credited with the birth of astrology (1645 B.C.). Their astrological charts enabled them to predict the recurrence of seasons and certain celestial events. So, as we mentioned earlier, in the beginning and for more than 2000 years, astrology and astronomy were the same science. Babylonian astrology was introduced to the Greeks early in the 4th century B.C. and, through the studies of Plato, Aristotle and other respected men of science, astrology came to be highly regarded as a science. Not much later, it was embraced by the Romans (whose names for the zodiacal signs are the ones still used today) followed by the Arabs and later spread throughout the entire world. By the time of Francis Bacon and the scientific revolution, astrology and astronomy began to diverge and while astronomy remained a central science, astrology was increasingly positioned as an occult practice or superstition by the religious powers that be who then forced this belief on natural scientists. This decline accelerated through the 18th and 19th centuries and it’s only lately, in the last 30 years, that astrology is starting to be recognized as a scientific practice again. For that reason, one of my proudest moments was discovering that my publisher, Llewelllyn Worldwide, had categorized my book to be sold in the “Self Help/Spiritual” section of each book store rather than the “Occult” section.

Kala: Astrology in the past was under the field of astronomy. Now astronomers discount the field. In the 21st century, there is great hope that Science and Spirituality will begin to work together to find answers to the many mysteries of the universe. This report struck me as a pie in the face to astrologers. Is there a future where scientists will work with professional astrologers?

Marguerite: I really hope so, Kala because until we do, I believe science in general and astronomy in particular is missing a big chunk of the Universal puzzle. A chunk that wasn’t missing years ago because, as you mentioned, unlike our astronomers today, the ancient astronomers practiced astronomy and astrology as one comprehensive science because, while they knew our existence on this planet was designed to be depressingly physical, after years spent doing the medieval math, they were equally convinced that the universe we inhabited was more than just one-dimensional. Most people would think: “in their primitive world, how could they know?“ As far as I’m concerned, in their line of work, how could they not? As professional astronomers they not only studied the heavens to discover how celestial objects moved and the universe worked as a whole; as equally professional astrologers (a job that was in many ways more difficult and in every way more mathematical) they analyzed those findings to determine how those movements affected all of us down below. “All of us” meaning our minds, bodies, and souls. In fact, for that reason (and despite the political correctness and religious pressures of their time-and there were many) these seasoned sky watchers were among the first to adopt the principle that ours was a multi-leveled universe made up of nothing but well-ordered energy. Talk about impressive! To their way of thinking, mental energy vibrated on the intellectual level; body energy vibrated on the physical level; and the eternal part of anything, or the “soul,” vibrated on yet another level. A level, incidentally, that today’s “hard” scientists still refuse to acknowledge as being a scientific one—the spiritual level. And while we all know that just about every scientist today embraces the concept that all energy is connected, these very best minds of yesterday were the first, and in many cases the only, to officially acknowledge all of the levels in our particular time space continuum that were necessary to actually connect it. They had no choice. To them, a universe could only be “divine” if it was available to all energy on all levels. If ours was a divine universe (which they decided it was based on the way they determined it functioned) then it had to be available to the mind, body and soul of everything that vibrated to it and, therefore, existed in it. A category, by the way that included us. All of us. Therefore, it had to be a universe in which mental, physical and spiritual energy flowed continuously, harmoniously and circularly—a universe where the physical science of astronomy included the spiritual reality of astrology. It was that simple because to them it was just science. But here’s the amazing part, according to the Universal Laws of Divine Order, that concept still is.

But, while this kind of thinking puts them clearly ahead of their own time, it’s not what (in my opinion) puts them ahead of ours. This does: in their professional opinion, in this particular universe, all of that well-ordered energy was divine, and (wait for it) one of the levels it operated on was spiritual. I’m convinced that’s how they were able to glean so much information about our solar system and this Universe that to this day, still stands up. And when you think of the limited tools and technology they had at their disposal, that’s nothing short of incredible. Besides, if spirit is the highest intellectual dimension, as many believe it is, wouldn’t the wonderful world of science in general and the field of astronomy in particular be better off if this overlooked dimension were invited to the cosmic party? Wouldn’t it be a more interesting party? At the very least, wouldn’t it be a more stimulating one? I think so.

Kala: Thank you Marguerite. Dear readers, I now turn the question to you and ask, ‘Is this a sign of the times?’ What does it say about the fate of humanity when one astronomer’s opinion of astrology has the power to go viral and upset so many people? This perhaps is the most concerning point of all. Share your thoughts on this matter.  Want to hear more from Marguerite? She was my guest on the Explore Your Spirit show. This week on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show – The Reiki Guide to Self Attunement

This week on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, Kala speaks with Brett Bevell, a reiki master and author of The Reiki Magic Guide to Self-Attunement and Reiki for Spiritual Healing. Reiki tradition dictates that we first be initiated, or “attuned,” by a Reiki master in order to properly practice the healing art. With attunement fees as high as $10,000, this custom has barred many hopefuls from ascending through the degrees of Reiki mastery. In this revolutionary guide, Reiki master Brett Bevell breaks with convention and extends the transformative powers of Reiki to all by presenting at-home rituals for self-attunement. In the true healing spirit of Reiki, he also encourages creativity and experimentation with the practice, allowing readers to personalize Reiki for their everyday use.

Reiki master Brett Bevell is author of The Reiki Magic Guide to Self-Attunement and Reiki For Spiritual Healing. A poet and performance artist, he is also author of America Needs a Woman President and America Needs a Buddhist President, a poem that initially aired nationwide on NPR’s All Things Considered. Since receiving his Reiki master initiation in 1995, Bevell has dedicated himself to discovering new Reiki techniques that work collaboratively with the higher self. These simple techniques are not only highly effective, but also shift Reiki into a practice of daily living that can transform even the most mundane aspects of our lives into works of healing.
Also a spoken-word artist, Bevell has electrified audiences around the world with his live oral recitations, and he has often been compared to the late poet Allen Ginsberg. His writing has received critical acclaim from authors such as Anne Waldmen, Rha Goddess, and John Perkins, and has appeared in numerous magazines, including Earth First Journal and Tricycle. Bevell’s poetry is featured on several CDs and is part of NPR’s permanent website archives.
