On this episode of the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, Kala speaks with Dr. Gregg Korbin about his book, Beyond Reason: Lessons from the Loss of a Gifted Child. Sometimes people enter our lives and change us forever. Author Gregg Korbon’s son, Brian, was such a person. In Beyond Reason, Gregg shares the story of his sweet and brilliant nine-year-old child. Though healthy, Brian told his parents he was going to die before he reached “double digits” (age ten). Six months later, after scoring the first run of his Little League career, he collapsed.

Though his death garnered media attention, the mysteries before and after his death were never shared. Brian foresaw his future, gave himself a going away party, and left good-bye gifts and a note telling his parents not to worry about him. After his death, Brian’s influence continued. His father—a rational physician who did not believe in metaphysical phenomena—embarked on a mystical journey through grief into a creative world he did not know existed. What he learned by healing stretched the capabilities of his reasonable mind.

More About Dr. Gregg Korbin:
Gregg Korbon enlisted in the army after high school and served as an artillery officer during the Vietnam era. He then attended Duke University and Duke University School of Medicine, specializing in anesthesiology and pain management. Dr. Korbon taught at Duke and the University of Virginia medical schools, entered private practice, and now directs an outpatient surgery center. He has authored books and research articles and developed new techniques that are widely used in his field. Dr. Korbon has also had a long-standing interest in outdoor education and is a senior facilitator at the University of Virginia’s Poplar Ridge challenge course. While an undergraduate at Duke, he created a weeklong adventure course for incoming freshmen, now called Project W.I.L.D. (Wilderness Initiative Learning at Duke), which became a model for many university outdoor programs. He holds a black belt in tae kwon do, a brown belt in judo, and has logged over forty thousand miles as a bicycle commuter. Dr. Korbon has known challenge and pain, but it was only through the death of his son that he found their common source. He lives in the Blue Ridge Mountains of central Virginia with his wife and children.

Joie De Vivre! My cup runneth over!

You may have read on Explore Your Spirit where I share that the theme of Explore Your Spirit TV is to brings you “Joie de vivre” (french for a cheerful enjoyment of life and an exultation of spirit). Each month I explore a new episode on EYS TV as I interview luminaries who share the joy in living and follow them along their path to see what the best and brightest minds are doing in the mind body spirit community.

Last month, Peaceful Warrior Dan Millman was my guest on Explore Your Spirit TV. His new book, The Four Purposes of Life has something to share with everyone, regardless of where they are in their life. It’s a wonderful gift for high school and college graduates up to retirees looking to start out on their next chapter in life. I’ve always connected with Joie De Vivre and the concept of living a life of finding joy in every moment. I delight in the simplest of acts and I find that when my energy is connected with joy, everything flows around me and the most delightful, amusing and synchronistic events occur.  For me, that’s often about relishing and delighting in the small things that come along the way, where the Universe shows its sense of humor and says, Hey there, I acknowledge you and what you are doing and you are on the right path.

Today for me, it was a small thing, but I found it so charming that I had to share with you. I had been looking for a cup to take with me while I travel, that would meet a long list of needs that I wanted. This included the cup being durable and able to handle being on the road and getting bounced around and probably dropped a few times as well. This meant it would be probably be plastic, but I wanted to make sure it was a BPA Free plastic, so safe to use. I also wanted it to be double walled, so that it would keep drinks cold and not sweat on me, my books, paperwork and other material while teaching and lecturing at events. Last, and this I thought was the challenge, I wanted it to have a top that would fit securely so it wouldn’t spill while allowing a straw for easy drinking.

With all that in mind, I began my search online to find such a cup and found one that I thought might work. The price was right and so I ordered it after only seeing a tiny square picture of it, which looked like it had a floral design.   It has arrived and the design is beautiful, full of abundant florals and fruits and everything I wanted, double walled, BPA Free, a twist off top that fits securely and has a straw that doesn’t fall out and somehow doesn’t allow spills, even when I tip the cup sideways, wow! Then I see it, and I can’t contain my laughter and delight! There written on the cup is JOIE DE VIVRE!  My very own cup expressing my energy and thoughts, how fortuitous and synchronistic!  Now with each sip of water or other cold beverage I take, I have the beautiful reminder of the joy in my life every day!

It’s all about the little things in life, that can bring such joy to our day.  Take the time to look for these simple signs from the Universe saying, “I love you, I get you, and I resonate with what you are saying.” You’ll begin to see these signs all around, tiny blessings just for you!

Author Randy Rogers

This week on Explore Your Spirit with Kala Radio, my guest is Randy Rogers, the president of Telefilm, Inc., a Los Angeles based production company. His career spans four decades of working in the newspaper, television and motion picture business. During that time, he has covered every type of major news event from George McGovern’s 1972 election bid to the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989. His company, Telefilm, has handled the promotion of the world’s biggest motion pictures including The Matrix, Harry Potter, Pearl Harbor, Batman, Superman, Shrek, Toy Story, Iron Man and Indiana Jones.

In just about everyone’s life, there comes a time when they may question their reason for existing. For Randy that journey began on a day in June of 1995, shortly after he had moved into his new home. A feeling swept over him that an old friend from grade school, Kathy Lynch, had passed away. He had not seen Kathy since 1973 but now he couldn’t get her, or the feeling that she was gone from this world, out of his mind. His former news background was one of many forces pushing him in an intense search to find what became of her. His investigation quickly turns into an obsession, driven by dreams and a pattern of synchronistic events. Along the way, he’lI find that he, Kathy, and a mysterious author named L.W. Rogers, are somehow all linked together in the past. Becoming Human Again by Suzanne Meier Amazon Kindle Edition

Welcome to Kala’s Quick Five, where I chat with fascinating authors, artists, teachers, and researchers and ask them five questions about their work. My guest today is Suzanne Meier, author of Becoming Human Again.  Born in Switzerland, Suzanne has since lived in the US, Canada, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, England, and Cuzco, Peru. She writes from a ‘four corners of the world’ perspective. Her locally derived knowledge contributes to a unique cultural insight on how each solitary individual affects the collective whole. After having been caught in an act of war and experiencing a near death experience, Suzanne’s in-depth search for truth, healing and spiritual awakening accelerated greatly. Through discernment, intuition and research, Suzanne learned to connect the dots between perceived human reality and what really is.

Kala: Suzanne, your book is entitled “Becoming Human Again.”  How do you define the concept that we have in a sense, lost our humanity?

Suzanne: Over the past decades, the grip big corporations and an ever-growing government, have on us increased ridiculously. Humans turned into mere robots, driven by the machine, reacting to the infotainment fed to us via the numerous channels. We have allowed the given scripts to infiltrate and rule our minds. Unconsciously, we react to stimuli, instead of acting and listening to our own voice. This own voice, this god within, is neglected or virtually unknown. Yet, it holds the key to happiness and fulfillment.

Who are we? What defines us? It shouldn’t be the political party, the religious organization, or the local quail egg interest group that imprints the label of who we are on the forehead. Who we are should come from the human inside, the self, the consciousness. Why have we given up? Like the geese, stuffed for fois gras, we are saturated with info and entertainment. In essence, it is the apathy, the complacency that keeps us from stillness, nature, love and being human.

Kala: You speak about “humanness” being attacked and corrupted at every level, discussing our food sources, toxic chemicals, longer work hours and a degraded school system. How do you think we created this predicament?

Suzanne: This predicament is profit-driven. Large companies greedy for ever-increasing bottom lines and not much else have degraded ‘the healthy life.’ Go to a food expo and you will find chemicals and processing companies, pitching the latest food additives to increase shelf life, or yet another, even tighter, battery hen cage. Large corporations, backed by the government (they love each other), have eroded free time, increased stress levels, dumbed us down, poisoned us and taken our money, see the latest subprime disaster. At every level, we are stripped to bare bones. When we’re busy, in debt, on medication, or pleasantly stuffed with an abundance of infotainment, we can’t or don’t act. We are reduced to a sitting duck, full of stuff, buzz and fluff, playing the game, instead of switching from ‘screens to greens.’

Kala: You say that  “…Sheeple will need to transform to people.”  Can you elaborate on this thought?

Suzanne: To get rid of the ‘sheeple’ badge, humans may direct increased focus on the within, and in the process, become mindful, aware, responsible and sustainable. Mindless reacting is ‘sheeplish’. Acting from the core is ‘peoplish’.

I call this strategy – conscability – consciousness & sustainability. Such traits are needed in the coming Aquarian age. Conscability means people consume mindfully, know their inner being, potential and care about the world beyond the own backyard. They consult the within before they act. They are informed, but not inundated. They are aware and in touch with their human consciousness.

This is a change from today’s world in which we are solely concerned withego, owning things, amassing money or not looking our age. Away from needing affirmations about how good or how beautiful we are, but knowing and loving ourselves sufficiently to not have to rely on others for ego strokes. Loving ourselves enables loving others.

Kala: What tips can you offer to our readers about how to move as you describe, “from a robot like state, to a conscious, mindful human?”

Suzanne: Tap into the last unexplored frontier – human consciousness. It is the esoteric (within) experience we lack, and not the exoteric (without) obsessions. Of those, we’ve had plenty. Turn off the TV. Unplug your Xbox. Get inside of you. Spend the money for Blahnik shoes on a Vipassana meditation instead. Think about the suffering that went into the hamburger you just devoured. Act as from Earth, not against Earth. We should be with nature, not against nature. Learn to listen to your within. Learn to be, instead of do.

As within, so without. The world within reflects the world out there. By fixing the world inside of us, we change the world out there. It is the ultimate power accessible to humans. Numerous practices are available that help accessing deeper states, to name a few – meditation, Hemi-sync, Ho’onoponopono, Tantra, Buddhism, yoga or Qi Gong. It is said to take 21 days to establish a new routine. Hence, with a bit of dedication and perseverance we can make an impact in our and other’s Earthly experience. But to motivate you for this change, you need to know what’s wrong. Once you know, you may be motivated to make changes in your life and recover from the manipulation step-by-step.

Kala: What personal experiences led you to write this book?

Suzanne: An act of war stopped me in my tracks. I was in the heart of an attack in Sri Lanka, which had many people killed. The explosion of a claymore mine and ensuing gun fire locked me in world of gushing adrenaline, terror, death, but also miracle, for two hours. During the incident, I felt I was hovering above, hearing a voice say ‘This is not your cause, you will not die.’ Over and over, the voice repeated this phrase. Then, the powers above guided me out of the battlefield, through a rain of flying bullets, to a shelter, in form of a nearby house. I knew that I was safe and being saved.

After this incident, I suffered from PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), which I was determined to heal the natural way, not with traditional mind-numbing drugs, such as Prozac. My dad passed over the same year. The two tragedies nearly pushed me over the edge. I was a wreck. It took a year to heal be free of grief, anxiety and panic attacks. Nevertheless, there is always a silver lining. A serious spiritual journey started to unfold. I knew I had been saved by the light. I had proof the other side existed. I grew more sensitive, more in tune with myself and the world. Slowly, a new me developed. I finally lived and applied the wisdom I learned in the many spiritual classes I attended prior to Sri Lanka. This is when I decided to write Becoming Human Again, to share my global observations and help Earth and humans in the process.

As an intuitive child born in Louisiana, I grew up exposed to a rich variety of cultures. My soul flourished along the running waters of the Mississippi Delta, the Red River and the Gulf Coast, where I spent my childhood with friends who were French, Irish, African, Italian, Scottish and German.

Louisiana is a land known for its food, where a thick roux base mixes with spices, vegetables, seafood, meat and everything else in the kitchen and is thrown into a gumbo pot to the culinary satisfaction of the most discerning soul. This unique, eclectic mixture spills over into the people and their history creating amongst other things, some of the most soulful music the world has ever seen. Home to the Blues and Jazz, which is so powerful that whenever I hear the music playing, I have to stop what I’m doing and dance to the rhythm reaching deep within my soul, connecting me to who I am and to the roots where I come from.

Growing up listening to the stirring sounds of the Blues taught me about hope and about change. The Blues explained that circumstances can wear you down and at times, life can feel so difficult that your only friends appear to be despair and loneliness. While this sounds very sad, the Blues are actually about inner strength, hope and the fact that no matter how challenging things are, nothing remains the same indefinitely, change will always occur. As the talented blues musician Sam Cooke sang… “I know Someday, Change is Gonna Come”.

During this time of my life, change came for me on a daily basis. As my psychic senses began to unfold, my education continued as I studied astrology, tarot and how to read tea leaves like my great-grandmother. My concept of the universe expanded as my experiences with the world and the spirit world grew each day. Through these mystical experiences, I endured great loss, reveled in great love and discovered what anchored me, including my connection with trees to ground my energy and keep me strong and the knowledge that the power of moving water can heal a soul like nothing else I’ve seen.

As I continued my studies, spending half my life in the library reading and the other steeped in the music and culture of this land, I observed how the adults around me viewed life and how some of it differed from the wisdom I had inside my soul. They spoke often about hope; hoping that something would change, hoping a change would come, or a hope for a new tomorrow. While hope is a positive emotion to have, at that tender age, I instinctively knew that hope is just a small step to lead you onto the path of your destiny. Hope for a change, implies that we are powerless to make the change; that instead we must wait for another to bring it forth.

Deep within my soul, I understood a powerful lesson… What we think, we believe and what we believe, we become. I also knew that change is not something that happens outwardly, it begins within, with what we believe is possible.

In this fertile land, surrounded by teachers on this earth plane and the other side, I began my earliest studies of the esoteric teachings and connected with the universal and internal soul wisdom. With the help of my guides, I remembered what I had learned many lifetimes ago, and understood how to access and activate these universal laws, and thus re-discovered that my life would never be the same.

As I have taught in previous lifetimes in the ancient temples of Egypt along the Nile, and connected with again in the rich Louisiana cultural gumbo mix of music, blues, soul food and healing waters, I share here one of the universal laws regarding the power of change, which I speak about in my book, 9 Life Altering Lessons: Secrets of the Mystery Schools Unveiled.

…When We Activate Our Consciousness,
We Become Magical Beings and Can Harness Energy

When we activate our consciousness, it is released outward in a blast of energy. The all seeing eye of the universe senses this energy and looks directly at us! We have broken through a seal and where we once received a daily trickle of water into our system, we are now connected to a mystical endless sea. As we transform and become conscious creators, we become further connected to this ocean of energy and…

In that Moment of Awareness, Everything Changes.

To further explain … Universal energy flows continuously like a waterfall upon the earth plane. As our energy through thoughts, words and actions is released, we interact with this waterfall. Unless we are fully awake, the thoughts and energy we send out only interact for a brief moment with the waterfall, causing an action and reaction and then it dissipates as our attention turns elsewhere. The only way for the energy to expand is to hold on to this thought, continuing to direction our attention to the waterfall, which causes greater action and reaction to happen regarding this particular thought. In our un-awakened state, our lower self sends this energy from our emotional and mental bodies, which drains our energy throughout the day. Basically we send out a lower level desire or impulse and it is reflected back to us and we move from one thought to the next.

However, when we become “Conscious Creators”, we send thoughts from our Higher Selves. We send deliberate, focused energy to this universal waterfall. We are saying, “Now, I See You and You See Me”! “I AM interacting with you and wish to magnify this energy with you to create an outcome”.

As the All Seeing Eye or Universal Energy becomes aware that you are “aware”, its energy quickens and vibrates more excitedly with your energy field and things begin to happen at a faster pace. It has no problem keeping up with you, as quickly as you are willing to progress. At this point, you will just be beginning to see what changes are truly possible in such a magical universe. Indeed as we have said before, the possibilities are endless! However, it must be said, one is better served to first master these  teachings and understand both the concepts and the pitfalls before attempting to work with them. Otherwise consequences can result which are unwanted and the student may not be prepared to handle the resulting outcome. Think of Universal Energy as having the same effect as electricity. Electricity has great power. At first, in its raw unleashed form, it is exhilarating to see, as in a lightening storm. Should this storm approach closer to you and your home, you soon realize that it also has the power to cause great destruction. On the flip side, electricity when properly understood and harnessed can be used in whatever form you wish, including lighting and heating your home, along with many other wonderful forms of focused energy.

Each esoteric teaching contains a series of deeper mysteries to unravel. The path of the esoteric student is to cultivate patience while remaining open to change, and questioning all experiences until discernment is found. Rather than discouraging you from this path, my hope is that it stimulates your mind and stirs your soul, bringing forth long forgotten memories of who you used to be and who you are meant to be again… You have only to ask these questions to the universe, to begin your journey today.

Let me share a teaching regarding conscious creation and the power to change I refer to as, “spinning plates”. Many students and some teachers believe that it takes an extraordinary amount of effort to access this energy. In the beginning, this is true for some people. However, one of the skills students develop over time is how to connect with this energy, creating the outcome (the change) they would like to achieve. Once this connection is established, you need only to check in every so often to make sure it is still vibrating as you desire, recharging it with energy on an occasional basis so that it continues to move. You can see this when you observe a performer twirl plates on sticks. He begins by twirling one plate and then is able to go to the next and the next, until many plates are spinning. He only needs to touch each one gently to keep the momentum going on them. When he tires of the performance and it has lost its appeal, he simply pulls his attention from the plates, and does not give them any further energy, allowing them to come to an ending.

Think about this concept. Where does your energy go and what do you pour your energy into on a daily basis? Are you satisfied with where your energy is going, what plates are spinning over your head right now? Recognize that with each thought, you are making changes, whether you desire to do so or not…

In my work, I meet with many people who tell me of their fear of change. When they tell me this, I know that they have lost their mojo. They are surprised when I remind them that with each thought, word, action and deed, we create a change within ourselves and with each person we interact with. I tell them, the only constant in life is change! Indeed, we are constantly in a flux and sea of change. The goal is to awaken to the fact that we have an active role in what changes come our way. We can awaken to be the Conscious Creators we were always meant to be and by doing so, co-create the changes we wish to see in our lives.

As my co-creation journey unfolds, I continue to tap into what I call my ‘sacred mojo’,
which is the soulful power of water, words and music, begining in my childhood in Louisiana.

Summer Solstice is a three-day celebration of the apex of the Sun’s journey bringing light to the Earth. Though the heat of Summer is just beginning, this date actually begins the ‘metaphorical’ decline of the Sun as it embarks on its journey to the Underworld, which will culminate on December 21st,( the darkest day of the year).

This cycle also represents the stages of life that each person goes through in the physical, the spring of our youth, the summer peak of our adult years, the reaping of wisdom in our golden years of autumn and the return to spirit world in winter.

Ancient cultures including the Egyptians and Druids marked the passage of time in nature and the spirit world. They used the concepts of the Divine Masculine and Divine Feminine principles found on the earth plane and the higher planes to teach about the circle of life. The story of the Oak King and the Holly King in the Druid lore or the Egyptian gods Isis and Osiris are both examples of how the seasons and cycles change.

This celebration is also known as Midsummer, the longest day of the year and the first official day of Summer. On this day, it is said that the Goddess manifests as Mother Earth and the God as the Sun King. In Celtic lore, it regarded as the best time to see fairies.

How Summer Solstice Is Celebrated

Summer Solstice is a time to celebrate and revel in the light and lighter side of life. In ancient times, most marriages were held during the month of June and the tradition called the ‘Honey Moon’ is a pagan tradition. The word honeymoon, came from the drinking of mead (made of fermented honey), which was used in wedding ceremonies held during MidSummer.

Ancient Celts lit huge bonfires in clearings and on roads to give strength to the sun and keep evil spirits at bay. People wore amulets made with herbs to protect themselves, while others leaped through bonfires for purification, good health and love.

The evening before, during and after the Summer Solstice is the most important time of the year to pay attention to your dreams. It is reported that during this three day period, that what is dreamed of, will come to fruition. It is also the time that the ‘fae’ (faries) bestow good luck upon the people and is considered to be the best day of the year to see a fairy. This magic was best popularized in Shakespeare’s ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Legends state that in order to see a fairy on MidSummer’s eve, sit quietly outside with your eyes half open and gaze at a spot under a big tree. Fair warning: if you meet a fairy, don’t eat their food or you’ll have to remain with them for seven years, (which could be a lot of fun, but will seriously wreck any plans you have made).

A Wisdom Teaching Ritual for Summer Solstice:

In my work as a wisdom teacher, I share rituals that were used in the ancient temples, while bringing them into modern day practices. The Summer Solstice is a powerful time to visualize any negative thoughts and energy burning away to nothingness.  Here is a Purification/Cleansing ritual for the Summer Solstice:

The first step is to remove any negative thoughts you are holding on to. Write down your negative feelings on paper and then release them by burning them to ash in a safe container.

The second step is to remove negative energy from the home. In order to do this, bundle rosemary and white sage together with white thread and dip the tips into a bowl of spring water and sprinkle about the house to remove negativity and cleanse and purify.

The third step is to purify and cleanse your body and energy fields. Take a shower and while doing so, visualize the water washing your negative energy away and cleansing you. Here is the ritual to say while the water is on you in the shower. Begin by taking three deep breathes, breathing deeply to inhale and removing any stagnant energy when exhaling.

Then say aloud:

Mother Earth grounds me (earth)
This deep breath restores me (air)
The rays of Father Sun nourish me. (fire)
This pure water renews me. (water)
I am filled with Pure Light as I journey forward. (spirit)

Touch your forehead and say…
Let my mind open to the truth. (divine wisdom)

Touch your lips and say….
Let my lips speak the truth. (divine communication)

Touch your heart area and say:
Let my heart seek the ways of pure love, now and always. (divine love)

Touch each palm and say:
Let my hands be gifted to work in healing ways. (divine touch)

Touch the sole of each foot and say:
Let my feet ever walk upon the sacred path. (divine journey)

Exit the shower, wrap yourself up in a robe and find a comfortable place to sit. Light a candle and drink some spring water. When comfortable, begin a 15 minute meditation, asking for your guides to join you and share with you a message they have for you this night.

Ganesh Baba’s teachings are known as Crea Yoga and evolved from several practices including tantric practices from Kriya Yoga and his life experiences with the Naga Babas and their connection with Lord Shiva.

For Yoga aficionado’s, the book is a wonderful addition to your library, filled with pearls of wisdom and reminders of how daily practice of the body and the mind lead to living in spirit, beyond the illusion of time.

A personal favorite in the book for me is on page 89-90, which discusses the third level of Crea, which is defined as… ‘conscious action. This is the heart of practice: using your free will, your attention, consciously, to the greatest benefit of all’.
