Outdoor stage at the Lost Colony area

In 1584, explorers were sent to Roanoke Island (a narrow island situated between the Outer Banks and the mainland of North Carolina) by Sir Walter Raleigh to determine if the area would be well suited to establishing a colony. Upon their return, they delivered a positive report of the location, which included a list of the abundant natural resources surrounding the area and findings that Roanoke was better protected from the elements than the Outer Banks. The island appeared all around to be a good choice for a settlement with live oaks and plenty of other trees to build cabins and a variety of wildlife to hunt for food. Sir Walter Raleigh delivered the information to Queen Elizabeth and she granted Raleigh a charter to all the lands that he could claim in the area.

The next year Sir Raleigh sent out a group of one hundred men, mostly soldiers and craftsmen to establish the colony under the guidance of Ralph Lane, a military captain. The group met with poor results from the beginning and departed the area.

Sir Raleigh responded to the news of Lane’s departure by gathering a party of one hundred and seventeen men, women and children who were willing to sail from England in order to establish a permanent settlement in the New World.   As the group sailed to the New World, their leader John White included in his party his pregnant daughter Eleanor Dare.  Upon their arrival, the situation was hostile on all fronts and the colonists asked John White to return to England to gather support and supplies.

Three years after Eleanor gave birth to her daughter Virginia Dare, her father John White returned to Roanoke Island to find everyone and everything missing. All traces of the settlement had disappeared. There was no sign of struggle nor were there any signs of where the group had gone.  His heart raced with terror, were his daughter and his granddaughter alive? Had someone taken them?  There had been no way to get a direct message to them for the past three years. The colonists had no news source and relied on ships that very infrequently stopped in the area. It’s highly likely that the colonists might not have known about the war that had kept White from traveling back to them. They may have presumed White to be dead or lost at sea.

Imagine how Eleanor must have felt, a new baby and practically defenseless, waiting each day in such dangerous territory, cradling her small daughter Virginia while everyone rationed the dwindling supplies.  John White understood this and more, realizing that his dream of starting the first settlement in the new world and bringing his daughter with him, had led to her destruction.

White searched through the entire settlement and the only clues he found was the word CROATAN carved into one of the trees and the letters CRO carved in a second tree nearby. He had asked the group to leave a sign should they be forced to move further inland and suggested that they use the sign of a Maltese cross carved in a tree should they be under attack and forced to flee for their lives.

The lost colony of Roanoke remains a mystery to this day.  Many theories have risen throughout the years over what happened to the colonists. They include: a hurricane swept over them and destroyed the settlement and washed all the colonists out to sea; a hostile native tribe killed them all, buried their bodies and destroyed the settlement; and the settlers, angry at what they perceived as White’s desertion or death, and now hungry, alone, and cold, set out to live elsewhere and died along their journey, or they left and went to live with the Croatan tribe.

Supernatural explanations have also been raised, including werewolves attacking the group and turning the colonists into werewolves; or as they abandoned the settlement, the native tribes destroyed the camp and cursed it in order to keep others from returning.  One theory posits that aliens arrived on the shore and took all of the colonists with them onto their space ship. The area is considered to be haunted by the tragedies and deaths which occurred during this time.

Researchers continue to discuss and debate the lost colony of Roanoke. Many believe that the settlers argued during the months after White left, some believing that he would never return and others holding out hope. One opinion is that the group broke up into two parties and went their separate ways, some heading towards Chesapeake Bay where they had originally intended to settle and the others partnered up and assimilated into the Croatan tribe.

Each summer in North Carolina, visitors from around the world visit Manteo to see the outdoor theater performance of The Lost Colony. The theater uses the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean in the area where the Lost Colony once existed.

World champion golfer Ian Poulter had a rough day on Friday, May 27th, 2011 playing the Euro BMW PGA Championship, where his performance shall we say, wasn’t up to his usual par. Perhaps he has other things wearing on his mind. According to Poulter’s Twitter account, he is currently living in a haunted house. Beginning in late April, Ian began to take notice of the paranormal phenomena he was experiencing in a home that he was renting in Hilton Head,South Carolina.  He had this to share on Twitter,  “Check this out, we have a ghost in our house this week & I’m not joking we have had some very strange goings on every night,”

He reported locking and dead bolting doors only to find them thrown open the next morning with no signs of forced entry or damage to the locked doors.  At last count, he had experienced this event seven times.  He’s reached out on Twitter to mull over getting a camera to record the ghostly experiences as they continue in the home.

Supernatural experiences of this nature make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep and to rest peacefully. This may have led to increased stress and sleep deprivation for Poulter during his stay in the home, which could have the effect of throwing him off of his game.

Brad Steiger has been my guest on Explore Your Spirit Radio many times over the past five years and it’s always a pleasure to discuss his work with him.  I think the last book of his that we discussed (he’s written over 170 books by the way), was Real Vampires, Night Stalkers and Creatures from the Darkside. The Real Vampires book is a chilling chronicle by Steiger who shares that vampires are not immortal, do not have fangs or sleep in coffins, and have no fear of sunlight or crucifixes, the examination dispels many myths but also confirms the truth behind several traits of real vampires, such as the insatiable thirst for blood and the dream of an eternal soul.

His latest book is Real Aliens, Space Beings and Creatures from the Other Worlds (Visible Ink Press) 2011.  Picking up the book, I found I couldn’t put it down! I had a million things to do the day that the book arrived at my home, and I kept telling myself, ‘Ok, finish this page and then put the book down, you have things to do!’  But I couldn’t do it, each story pulled me in deeper and I wanted to read more, more, more!  Brad is an incredible story teller and author and just like having him on the show, I want to take in every detail that he had to share.

In Real Aliens, Brad Steiger reports on visits by aliens and about the ones who are living amongst us.  He discusses abductions, the history of alien sightings and spacecraft and investigates the ongoing cooperation between aliens and earthlings.

Since my childhood,  I have seen and felt ghosts and restless spirits. I’ve learned a lot over the years of interacting with the spirit world and not every encounter was smooth. I once lived in a haunted house, where the ghosts weren’t friendly or ready to move on into the light. I learned about what the spirit world can do first hand and it was a very powerful lesson. More About Z Budapest:
Zsuzsanna Emese Budapest was born in Budapest, Hungary, during a big winter storm on January 30, 1940. Her mother, Masika Szilagyi, was a medium and a practicing witch who supported herself and her daughter with her art, as a sculptress. Masika’s themes always celebrated the Triple Goddess and the Fates, and Zsuzsanna, “Z,” grew up respecting and appreciating Mother Nature as a god. The poverty of postwar Europe and political oppression under the Russian occupation made Z fiercely political, so when the Hungarian Revolution broke out in 1956, she took her destiny into her own hands and became one of those sixty-five thousand political refugees who left the country, mostly young workers and students like herself. She finished high school in Innsbruck, graduated from a bilingual gymnasium, and won a scholarship to the University of Vienna where she studied languages.

Z emigrated to the United States in 1959, became a student at the University of Chicago, married, and gave birth to two sons. Her family’s spiritual tradition, however, started seeping back into her life, and she practiced solo worship of the Goddess at her home altar in her backyard. When she entered her Saturn cycle at the age of thirty, she became involved with the women’s liberation movement in Los Angeles and became an activist herself, staffing the Women’s Center there for many years. There she recognized a need for a spiritual dimension so far lacking in the feminist movement and started the Women’s Spirituality Movement. She founded the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number l, the first feminist witches’ coven, which became the role model for thousands of other spiritual groups being born and spreading across the nation. She wrote The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries (Weiser Publishers, 1989) which was originally published in 1975 as The Feminist Book of Lights and Shadows. This book served as the first hands-on book to lead women into their own spiritual/Goddess heritage. Z was arrested in 1975 for reading Tarot cards to an undercover policewoman. She lost the trial but won the issue, and the law against psychics was struck down nine years later. Z has led rituals, lectured, taught classes, given workshops, written articles tirelessly, and published in hundreds of women’s newspapers across the country. She has powerfully influenced many of the future teachers and writers about the Goddess. She is the star of her own cable TV show called 13th Heaven and acts as the director of the Women’s Spirituality Forum, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a monthly lecture series in the Bay Area about the Goddess, spirituality retreats, and annual spiral dances on Halloween.
