What Did We Discover and Uncover – 2010 in Review

2010 in Review - What Did We Discover and Uncover?

Looking back over the 2010 year, I was reminded that what we think about, we create in our world. Let’s take a look at what I wrote about this year to see how the world was unfolding. 2010 in Review – What Did We Discover and Uncover?  As I look it over, I see a collective journey moving into conscious thought and awakening. Now that the inner self for many has awakened, the years ahead will bring a time of action, rebirth and growth.

We began the year with my discussion about this new decade beginning in 2010, would mark the advent of a new Renaissance period. The New Year began with a full Blue Moon in conjunction with a Mercury Retrograde. I believe and feel that… ‘In this new decade, we are moving into a new Age of Enlightenment. The Aquarian information from the gods can no longer be contained, the Divine Feminine is being released in all her glory and we will once again see a Renaissance period, where great art, architecture, philosophy, literature and science will develop and flourish. During this decade the greatest minds will stir, to share, to illuminate and to build and create works and ideas that will be marveled around the world.’

In Feb, I shared Seven Sacred Ways to celebrate Imbolc and the Goddess Energy. In the wisdom teachings of the Divine Feminine, there are certain earth cycles, which open a gateway between the higher planes of existence and the earth plane. These moments of enhanced connection allow us to view the rhythm and timing of the goddess in her form as mother nature. Imbolc is one of these powerful cycles of time throughout the year.  Many people are awakening again and connecting with the goddess energy and the natural laws of the universe.  Read the rest of the article here for the seven ways to connect…

Then came the launch of the Ask Kala column, where I invite you to email me with your metaphysical, spiritual and esoteric questions. One of my favorite questions of the year was.. ‘How can you communicate with someone who has passed on, after they have reincarnated again?’ This profound question is one that many have struggled with understanding the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Read my answer to this question here…

We looked into the eye of the tiger, as we celebrated the Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year is the most important traditional holiday in China and is also referred to as the Spring Festival. The date of the new year is based on a lunar calendar, which has been used for centuries and is much older than the solar Gregorian calendar used in the west for most events. In 2010, the White Tiger leaped into the year with his energy… Read the article here…

What’s going to happen in 2012 is a question on many minds and I sat down with Marie D. Jones, to interview her about her book – 2013: End of Days or New Beginning.  I delved into earth changes with Marie asking her questions including - ‘What are your thoughts about the earthquakes and tsunami’s occurring around the earth recently? Are there more to come? Also, what about the report that the 8.8 earthquake in Chile shifted the earth’s axis by eight centimeters, which removes 1.26 microseconds off of Earth’s daily rotation, therefore altering time?’ Read Marie’s answer here…

The explorations continued in the Ask Kala column, as millions are exploring their journey and life path and destiny. Another one of my favorite questions came from a man who wanted to know how to connect and find his spiritual teacher. Read my answer here…

In 2010, I traveled often and shared my experiences with readers. One of my favorite journeys was to return to my beloved New Orleans, which has suffered so greatly in the past decade. Through all of her troubles, she is still a beautiful jewel of a city and I was again, Charmed by the Spirit of New Orleans. Read about my journey through the city here..

Holidays play such an important role in our history, passage of time and destiny and in 2010, I touched into many of these holidays including Connecting to the Spirit of Cinco De Mayo and how our identity forms us and how our identities are merging into a new world. Read the article here…

Another favorite interview of the year was when I spoke with the legendary Stanton Friedman about startling new information about cures, theories and inventions which were formerly declared impossible. Stanton’s new book is Science Was Wrong and we discussed many of these theories as I asked him questions like – ‘You and the late Carl Sagan were class mates in the physics department at the University of Chicago for three years. You mention in Science Was Wrong and elsewhere that he was wrong about UFO’s, abductions, and government cover-ups. Did you two argue in physics class about these theories or  did the differences evolve at a later date?’ Read the article here…

I also took a turn away from traditional beliefs and invited readers to Embrace Mercury Retrogrades, rather than fear them.  I explained that… ‘What I am saying though, is while good old Merc causes his share of trouble when he goes retro, he also brings a wealth of opportunities and if you understand how the retrograde works, you can use this information to your advantage.’ Read my explanation here..

In my travels I journeyed to Rhinebeck NY to teach at the world famous Omega Institute during the time that Chelsea Clinton was preparing to be married in the lovely village of Rhinebeck.  I could easily understand why she chose the location, as the natural surroundings were so beautiful with the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains as a backdrop. I had quite the adventure in New York and you can read about it all including my bumping into a ghost here….

One of the features in my column here as the National Metaphysical Spirituality Writer for the Examiner, is Kala’s Quick Five, where I interview authors, teachers and researchers about their work. One of the most thought provoking books and authors I came across this year was Dr. Gabriel Constans, who wrote the book, Buddha’s Wife.  During my interview, Gabriel and I discussed what life was like during this time and I asked him, ‘Gabriel, thousands of books, texts and stories have followed Siddhartha’s path to becoming The Buddha (and his teachings), but little has been written about his wife Yasodhara, how she reacted to his leaving her and their newborn child in the middle of the night, and her desire to find compassion and enlightenment for herself and others. What prompted you to write this book?’ Read Gabriel’s answer here…

An interesting anomaly in 2010 was the overwhelming media focus on LeBron James and his decision to leave Cleveland this year. Moves like this always make the news, but the amount of media attention he received over this decision is unrivaled. I explored his astrological chart to determine why this attention was so hot about his move to the Miami Heat. Read my explanation here…

One of the most interesting animal stories of 2010, was about Paul the Psychic Octopus, who predicted the World Cup winners. His psychic predictions were so accurate that he drew media attention from around the world and even some death threats against him and his mother. Read the story here…

As a wisdom teacher, I love to share the history of the world, including the parts that have been conveniently swept under the rug from current society. It’s part of duty this lifetime to expose these hidden bits of our past and bring them back into the light.  This year I shared the spirit and history of the winter solstice/christmas/yule/holiday season. Enlightened minds read on here…

We wrapped up the year heralding the return of sentimental gifts for the holidays. I shared sentimental gifts which are thought-provoking, emotion filled, and packed full of memories to be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages. This may indicate a new trend for the Christmas holiday where more consumers choose not to go into debt each year and instead create simple traditions shared with family and friends rather than blown out gift bonanzas.  Read about the sentimenal gifts here…

and lastly, I explored the celebration of Yule and how it continues into early January. Madrigal Feasts commemorate this holiday season and invited you to explore this tradition here…

Here we are dear readers, a new year has begun. What intentions will we create this year?

The future is now and each word, thought, action and deed we think and speak will set the direction and intention for our path.

I look forward to exploring with you this year for all the adventures that come our way.

Stay tuned as I’ll soon be discussing what the Chinese New Year and what the forecast for this year will bring.

Much love and joy to you all!

How Cool! 12 Merry Making Nights of Yule

Enjoy a 12th Night Madrigal Feast with Family and Friends

Have you ever attended a Madrigal Feast? If not, you’re in for a treat that your family and visiting relatives of all ages will enjoy. The Madrigal tradition originated as a celebration of the end of the 12 Days of Christmas in Medieval and Renaissance England.  More commonly known as “Twelfth Night”, the tradition is still celebrated in many communities as the official end of the holiday season.

In keeping with our theme of 7 Sentimental Gifts for the Holidays, how about surprising your family and friends by stuffing tickets in their stockings to attend a Madrigal Feast together. They’ll enjoy the opportunity to spend time together in a festive atmosphere long after the holiday hustle and bustle has worn off.

What’s a Madrigal Dinner like? Think of it as Dinner Theater. The Madrigal Feast is served in several courses based around a comedic play with a Renaissance theme. In most cases, a grand song is sung before the introduction of each new course is served at dinner and the audience is invited to participate and sing along. Many audiences are asked to play roles during the dinner, such as guests at the wedding of a princess or as participants in a royal proceeding.

If you enjoy a bit of light hearted theater with Kings, Queens, jesters, minstrels, wenches, knights, wizards, thieves and enchanted and mythical figures, consider attending a Madrigal Feast with family and friends each year as part of your new Yule holiday tradition. The camaraderie, playfulness and fantasy continues the lighthearted fun of the holiday season into January. After all, who doesn’t like to start the New Year with merrymaking, feasting and theater?

In North Carolina, the NC Historical Enrichment Society is hosting a Twelfth Night Madrigal Feast on January 8, 2011. Their celebration is hosted by King Henry VIII who will bring songs, dance, mischief, revelry and skits to keep all members of his court entertained and amused during the feasting.

As guests of King Henry and the NC Historical Society, you’ll dine like royalty with a four course meal which includes:

  • First Course – Mushroom Tart
  • Second Course – Tomato Bisque
  • Main Course – Half Herbed Cornish Hen with New Potatoes, Baby Carrots, String Beans en Papillote and Crusty Bread
  • Fourth Course – King Cake

Drink – Mulled Apple Cider and 1 glass of Wine or Beer included with meal. For tickets and more information, visit http://www.historicalenrichmentsociety.org/historicalMadrigal.html

Madrigal Feasts can be found all around the US. Check your local area for listings.

Happy Yule! Ringing in the Winter Solstice

Enjoy a chocolate Yule Log this holiday season

Yule, a festival of light with twelve days of feasting and public celebrations, begins at the Winter Solstice. Symbolic rituals are observed including the lighting of candles and a Yule log is kept burning throughout the twelve days to symbolize the returning of the light and the Sun after the darkest day of the year on Winter Solstice. A tasty addition to the festivities has been added in the form of a Chocolate Yule log cake.

The origin of this holiday comes from over 2000 years ago, originating in Northern Europe. The holiday began as a pagan tradition known as Yule, which was celebrated for 12 days.  During this time, Scandinavian people celebrated the Norse God Odin, a bearded god who flew through the air on a horse and handed out gifts. The Pagan Romans held a seven-day festival of Saturnalia beginning on December 17th, which included the celebration of the God Mithras, who was born on December 25th. They exchanged gifts, enjoyed feasts and once this festival culminated, the New Year festivities began. Modern day examples of how we celebrate these pagan traditions today include candles in the windows of our home and what we now call Christmas lights, which we hang on a Christmas tree (our modern adaptation of the yule log and evergreen branches that the ancient Europeans brought into their homes).

In the 4th century, Rome changed from a pagan society to a Christian society and the church began to replace and absorb pagan traditions. Since there was already a holiday in place to celebrate the birth of the God Mithras, the decision was made to switch this birthday and dedicate the day as a symbolic birth date for Jesus. The Roman Catholic Church holds a ritualistic midnight mass for this event, which became Christ’s Mass, i.e. Christmas.

Like many pagan traditions under siege in the attempt to be absorbed and overwritten by the church, the campaign was met with mixed success. The European people continued their own traditional pagan celebrations and simply added the new religious connotations into the mix.  Over the centuries, the festivals, feasts, gift giving and celebrations continued including the adoption of medieval carolers who went door to door singing while enjoying a cup of alcoholic punch at each stop.  Over the decades, Yule became the celebration of Christmas.

The festivals continued in this manner until around the 17th century when Protestant reformers decided that Christmas should be banned. Their reasoning was based on the premise that the holidays was built upon pagan traditions, which were then further embellished by the Catholic church with the adopted birthday celebration on December 25th. Both traditions, the pagan revelry and the Catholic traditions, were customs that they wanted no part of and they were able to ban Christmas in England. This only lasted for a few years, but many people who held this protestant belief moved during the 17th century to America, the New World and brought their religious beliefs with them. They were the Puritan settlers who formed the colony of Massachusetts. In 1659, they banned Christmas as a holiday in Massachusetts.  As new settlers including Catholics, Pagans, the Irish, Scottish, Dutch and others with moderate religious beliefs migrated to America establishing colonies in New York, Virginia and other Atlantic states, they brought their Christmas traditions and festivities with them and the celebration of Christmas was restored in the U.S.

How do we celebrate Christmas today? According to the History Channel’s documentary, The Real Story of Christmas, the preservation and evolution is credited to two influential Americans. The first is Clement Moore, who in 1822 wrote Twas the Night Before Christmas, which gave inspiration to new customs for the holiday, based on old world traditions. Moore combined the white bearded Norse God Odin who flew through the air handing out gifts with St. Nicholas, a 4th century Catholic Bishop who was known for gift giving in stockings and the two were then melded with Sinter Klaas, the Dutch version of St. Nicholas. Odin was known as the God of Thunder and was said to have flown on a horse with eight legs. Moore substituted Odin’s eight-legged horse into eight reindeer, which he gave individual names including Donner, which means thunder, and Blitzen, which means lightning.  He also combined old European stories of elves, making Santa Claus a wizard like magical elf.

The second influential figure was Thomas Nast, a famous illustrator who created the images of the donkey and the elephant for the Republican and Democratic parties and created the image of Uncle Sam.  In 1862, Nast took Moore’s poetic descriptions of Santa and drew the illustration of Santa Claus. He changed the image of Santa Claus from a smaller elf into a full size elf man with a white beard. He also created the concept of St. Nick’s naughty or nice list. (A lesser-known fact about St. Nicholas was that the original story of St. Nicholas said that when he visited houses, he was followed by a demon named Krampus who punished bad children). Nast glossed over this story by creating a gentler naughty or nice list. Nast also captivated his audience by capturing the growing sentiment of this time where children were becoming the focus of the family and thus Santa Claus was very attentive to children, bringing them gifts.

From the light filled traditions and festivals of the ancient Europeans, to the migration of Odin into Santa Claus and the bringing in of the evergreens from Northern Europe morphing into the Christmas tree, Christmas as a holiday has continued to evolve. The Industrial Revolution provided the opportunity for a variety of good and products to become mass produced and accessible to consumers and soon after, gift giving for the holiday began in earnest and became the American staple of the holiday that is widely celebrated today.

The holiday season continues to mix old and new, with a rise of neo-paganism bringing a resurgence of old traditions and returning back to the ancient customs and celebrations of Yule. This along with a growing distaste of Black Friday shopping complete with people fighting and trampling others over bargain gifts and thousands of Americans going into debt each year with over the top gift giving, may stimulate an entire new series of traditions and festivities in the 21st century.

Decorate like the ancients with boughs of evergreen and holly

Decorate like the ancients with boughs and garlands of evergreen and holly

I admit it, I’m a tree lover. I’ve written poetry and short stories about trees and have an ongoing crush with a gorgeous river birch tree in my backyard. I feel confident that several of my past lives were spent as part of a Druid community and trees hold a special place in my heart.

At this time of year, one of my favorite sights and smells of the holiday season in the home is the greenery. Ancient cultures have celebrated bringing in the green for thousands of years, adorning their homes with evergreen branches and boughs and adding a little mistletoe to keep the season merry and bright.

I’m known for my tree decorating skills and have an elaborate seven stage decorating ritual for my Christmas trees. Yes, I said trees, as I’m known to have several around the home each year.  With all that I love during the holidays, there’s one aspect to tree decorating that I’ve never been comfortable with, which is the tradition popularized in the Victorian age of chopping down a living tree and bringing it into the home.

I can acknowledge that the look and sentiment is endearing, but in our current time, I think perhaps it’s time to be more conscious of the fact that we are chopping down trees, (which provide oxygen when rooted in the ground) to be used for two weeks in our home and then discarded. In this age of pollution and toxins, maybe we can find a better way to bring the spirit and significance of evergreens into our homes.

If you are open to this sentiment, here are some ideas I’ve explored that you may enjoy as well:

  1. In ancient cultures, greenery was brought into the home in evergreen swags, boughs and garlands, which were placed above doors and around the home. I love the look as it used today on fireplace mantels, stair rails, and in wreaths and swags hanging from windows and doors.  Using green cuttings and branches as garland and wreaths, allow the tree to continue to live while only removing a few branches.
  2. Artificial Christmas trees have come a long way and are beautiful, very life like and can be used over again each year, saving both the forest and your budget. An added bonus is that the trees do not have to be watered, and they don’t dry out creating a potential fire hazard in your home. For those who love the ‘christmas tree smell’, the live evergreen branches on the mantle, wreath and around your home provide this beautiful scent.
  3. Consider wreaths made from herbs, which can be used in cooking after the holiday season. One of my favorites is from Williams-Sonoma, the ‘Cooks Herb Wreath’, which contains rosemary, sage, bay leaf, oregano and other herbs. Not only are the wreaths beautiful and exude an aromatic scent through the home, they make wonderful gifts. Nothing says an old fashioned Christmas than plucking bay leaves from the wreath hanging on the wall to throw into your recipe.
  4. I believe I’ve found the perfect compromise to satisfy those who wish to preserve trees and help the earth and those who love real christmas trees in their home. This year I wanted to bring in the energy of a living tree as a second tree for the holidays, so I purchased a live European Cypress tree from ProFlowers, which arrived in a red pot and included a mini string of colored lights and tiny wood ornaments. The tree come with instructions of how to care for it during the winter and in the spring, it can be removed from the pot and planted in the ground. My husband loved it and this spring we look forward to planting the tree in our backyard. We plan to continue this tradition each year, creating a forest of trees in our backyard, which will contain the many memories of our holidays over the years.  It’s the perfect sentiment for our family and each tree will carry the memories of the holiday spent in our home while continuing its life for many years to come on our land.  We look forward to the day when the young trees planted each year mature and can be decorated outside in the traditions of the ancients. It feels as though we’ve come full circle, it’s good for us, good for the trees and good for the earth.

Enjoy decking your halls with boughs of holly and perhaps creating a nourishing new holiday tradition for your family with a live tree which you plant in the spring.  Read about my other recommended 7 Sentimental Gifts for the Holiday Season.

Discover the Spirit and History of the Season of Yule

Evergreens and Light Represent the Season of Yule

Do you know the history and origin of Christmas? The traditions that you hold near and dear may not be as old as you think they are. Early Christians didn’t celebrate birthdays and the actual birth date of Jesus is still unknown. Some astrologers and historians have surmised that the location of the star over Bethlehem and the presence of lambs in the story represent a spring birth, but the actual date was never recorded. (For more information on this topic, check out my interview with Courtney Roberts, about her book and research on The Star of the Magi on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show)

They exchanged gifts, enjoyed feasts and once this festival culminated, the New Year festivities began. Are any of these customs beginning to sound familiar?

Yule is a festival of light, with twelve days of feasting and public celebrations. A large Yule log was kept burning throughout the twelve days to symbolize the returning of the light and the Sun after the darkest day of the year on Winter Solstice.  Later candles were added to keep the light burning, along with oil burning in lamps to symbolize the eternal light.

Summoning the Fates to Explore Your Spirit

This week on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, Kala speaks with Z. Budapest, author of Summoning the Fates. During the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, Z. Budapest narrowly escaped a massacre. Was it chance that spared her life, or destiny? In Summoning the Fates, Budapest, a pioneer of the women’s spirituality movement, introduces us to the three Fates that rule our lives. Not even the gods and goddesses can escape these raw forces of nature presiding over the past, present, and future. Budapest uses fairy tales, historical lore, and personal anecdotes to describe the three sacred sisters who are especially active during our thirty-year life cycles: Urdh (youth), Verdandi (adulthood), and Skuld (the crone years). Want a taste of the cosmic soup bubbling in Fate’s cauldron? Budapest also offers heartfelt advice, exercises, and rituals to help you connect with the Fates and embrace your own unique destiny.

More About Z Budapest:
Zsuzsanna Emese Budapest was born in Budapest, Hungary, during a big winter storm on January 30, 1940. Her mother, Masika Szilagyi, was a medium and a practicing witch who supported herself and her daughter with her art, as a sculptress. Masika’s themes always celebrated the Triple Goddess and the Fates, and Zsuzsanna, “Z,” grew up respecting and appreciating Mother Nature as a god. The poverty of postwar Europe and political oppression under the Russian occupation made Z fiercely political, so when the Hungarian Revolution broke out in 1956, she took her destiny into her own hands and became one of those sixty-five thousand political refugees who left the country, mostly young workers and students like herself. She finished high school in Innsbruck, graduated from a bilingual gymnasium, and won a scholarship to the University of Vienna where she studied languages.

Z emigrated to the United States in 1959, became a student at the University of Chicago, married, and gave birth to two sons. Her family’s spiritual tradition, however, started seeping back into her life, and she practiced solo worship of the Goddess at her home altar in her backyard. When she entered her Saturn cycle at the age of thirty, she became involved with the women’s liberation movement in Los Angeles and became an activist herself, staffing the Women’s Center there for many years. There she recognized a need for a spiritual dimension so far lacking in the feminist movement and started the Women’s Spirituality Movement. She founded the Susan B. Anthony Coven Number l, the first feminist witches’ coven, which became the role model for thousands of other spiritual groups being born and spreading across the nation. She wrote The Holy Book of Women’s Mysteries (Weiser Publishers, 1989) which was originally published in 1975 as The Feminist Book of Lights and Shadows. This book served as the first hands-on book to lead women into their own spiritual/Goddess heritage. Z was arrested in 1975 for reading Tarot cards to an undercover policewoman. She lost the trial but won the issue, and the law against psychics was struck down nine years later. Z has led rituals, lectured, taught classes, given workshops, written articles tirelessly, and published in hundreds of women’s newspapers across the country. She has powerfully influenced many of the future teachers and writers about the Goddess. She is the star of her own cable TV show called 13th Heaven and acts as the director of the Women’s Spirituality Forum, a nonprofit organization sponsoring a monthly lecture series in the Bay Area about the Goddess, spirituality retreats, and annual spiral dances on Halloween. Z founded and sponsors the Dianic University Online, a vagina-friendly online school for Dianic Wicca and Goddess studies for women. More info: www.zbudapest.com

This Thanksgiving Evocative New Research rewrites the History of Ancient America

On the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show, I had the opportunity to speak with Frank Joseph, the editor-in-chief of Ancient American magazine. The vision statement shared by Ancient American magazine is:

…”its editorial position stands firmly on behalf of evidence for the arrival of overseas visitors to the Americas hundreds and even thousands of years before Columbus— not only from Europe, but the Near East, Africa, Asia, and the Western Pacific. Each issue presents such otherwise neglected and even suppressed factual evidence demonstrating the lasting impact made on the Americas by Scandinavian Norsemen, Pharaonic Egyptians, Bronze Age Mediterraneans, Semitic Phoenicians, West Africans, Dynastic Chinese, seafaring Polynesians, and many other culture- bearers. All contributed to the birth and development of numerous and sophisticated civilizations which flourished throughout the American Continents in pre-Columbian times. It is the magazine’s purpose to show readers just how, when, and why these once powerful societies arose to great heights of cultural splendor and fell into deep obscurity as dramatic object lessons for our time. No rehash of well-worn theories, Ancient American offers up-to-the-moment news about ongoing discoveries and original perspectives, bringing to light a surprising abundance of fresh material that is seriously challenging entrenched conceptions of our past.”

Frank Joseph is also the author of over 20 books which have been published around the world, providing thought-provoking research on the history that you often don’t find in the textbooks. His works include: Atlantis and 2012, The Lost Civilization of Lemuria, The Lost Treasure of King Juba, Opening the Ark of the Covenant and the topic of our discussion during the show, Unearthing Ancient America: The Lost Sages of Conquerors, Castaways and Scoundrels.

In Unearthing Ancient America, Frank’s research explores the lost prehistory of the U.S.  We’re featuring this show on Explore Your Spirit with Kala during the Thanksgiving holiday as it contains fresh and occasionally suppressed information documenting the tremendous impact on North America by overseas visitors hundreds and even thousands of years before Columbus. I speak with Frank on the show about this evidence which includes: a medallion left in Michigan by Buddhist missionaries from India a thousand years ago, a 5th Century Christian church in Connecticut, the Grand Canyon’s underground city, a Roman statuette washed up at New Jersey, secret maps of America Columbus used for his first voyage to the New World, an Inca skeleton in Norway’s Viking grave, Florida’s own Stonehenge, and thirty other articles by twenty-three investigators describing the impact made by overseas visitors to our continent centuries before its official discovery.

I think you’ll find this interview to be fascinating and may open your eyes and thoughts to how our history is written and by whom.  We’re looking forward to having Frank back as a guest on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala Show in 2011, as I speak with him about his new book, Gods of the Runes: The Divine Shapers of Fate.

Planting a Field of Dreams – Connect with the Spirit of Fall

Welcome back to Exploring the Magic of Halloween and the Spirit of Fall. Thus far, we’ve discussed a brief history of Halloween and the legend of enchanted apples as well as the ancient tradition of celebrating November 1st as the New Year.

The Magical and Mystical Inspired Tip to consider today is….

Have a Seed Planting Ceremony

As I mentioned in the first article about Halloween – …’The history of holidays is one of the courses that I teach to students who study the ancient wisdom teachings with me. They always find it interesting when I discuss the date of January 1st, which we now toast as the New Year, yet it falls in the dead of winter.  If one was working with the elements and magic of nature, would it not make more sense to make resolutions and plant seeds in the Fall, so that they would have time to germinate and sprout forth in the Spring?  When one makes a resolution and plants that seed of thought in the dead of winter, there is little warmth and light to nurture these thoughts and it is no surprise to many of us, that the new year resolutions are dead and gone only a few weeks afterwards, as there was no nourishment for the seeds to take hold’.

The power of thought and manifestation allows us to create and form our dreams in our mind so that we can then take action to bring these dreams to fruition. The season of Fall represents this time for our seeds of thought to be planted in our mind, so we can give them some contemplation and introspection.

Want to create a seed planting ceremony tradition of your own?

Here’s your magically inspired tip of the day!

Invite friends to celebrate the New Year on Halloween and make resolutions for the new year. Hand out packages of seeds along with little clay pots filled with soil to each of your guests and invite them to plant new seeds of thought this Fall which will manifest and bloom with their new dreams in the Spring.  Use a toothpick and a small piece of white paper to make a sign that sticks in your clay pot and write one word that describes the dream that you are wanting to manifest.

If it’s not too late to plant bulbs in your backyard, dig a small hole and plant some bulbs to hold the energy of your resolutions and dreams. When they bloom this Spring, they will be a powerful reminder of how it takes time for dreams to manifest and that with care and action, they bloom! Don’t forget that you can also plant your old carved pumpkins into the ground with your bulbs, as they make great compost!

Sweet Dreams gentle readers and Happy Exploring! *~Kala~*

Finding Love with an Enchanted Apple – Explore 31 Magical Inspired Ideas for Halloween

Welcome back dear readers, to Exploring the Magic of Halloween and the Spirit of Fall. Each day up till October 31st, I’ll bring you mystical and magical tradition-filled ways to celebrate and embrace the spirit of the season. Yesterday, we began this series with a brief history of Halloween. Today we’re moving into some of the customs and traditions of Halloween, discussing their origins and how you can incorporate these traditions to connect with nature and the spirit world. Perhaps this is the right time for you to open up to the possibilities…

The Magical and Mystical Inspired Tip to celebrate today is….

Find Love using an Enchanted Apple.

This comes from the Roman tradition of celebrating Pomona, the goddess of trees and fruit. The fruit most associated with Pomona is the apple and most likely this is where the tradition of bobbing for apples began during Halloween.  Pomona was known as the goddess of plenty and she was celebrated during this time along with festivities for abundance and the harvest.

Most interesting though is that while the harvest was being celebrated, Pomona held court, and she was associated with trees blossoming, rather than the end of a cycle such as the harvest. Her name comes the latin word pomum, which means fruit.  One theory is that she held court during this time as a reminder that the cycle of nature and life continues and that even when things look near their end, a new cycle of plenty will blossom again soon. Another description for Pomona might be ‘hope springs eternally’.  Pomona is frequently depicted with a cornucopia full of delicious fruits which would have been traditionally used in the Fall as a harvest celebration of abundance.  We now use the cornucopia in modern day in the American tradition of Thanksgiving, so the next time you’re sitting at the table for Thanksgiving with the family, take note of the cornucopia, and offer a toast of gratitude to Pomona with your glass of apple cider.

It’s time to debunk more superstitions again. Most of the superstitions associated with Halloween were created in order to turn people away from celebrating the natural traditions and connections with the goddess energy. The apple is a symbol of fertility and it has been misrepresented in patriarchal stories, beginning in the Garden of Eden. One only has to look at stories presented today in politics, to see how quickly they are turned and misrepresented by the various parties, to achieve an end goal. The apple has been misrepresented along with symbols associated with it, including the pentagram. The pentagram (a symbol of the five pointed star) has been mis-represented as something to do with evil and dark energy, when in actuality, it’s a symbol of the goddess, fertility, unity and immortality. The five points represent earth, air, fire, water and spirit and the circle around the five points unites them together to create life and synergy. Many cultures have used this symbol, including the ancient Pythagoreans, who connected it to Hygieia, the goddess of health )where the word hygiene comes from) and they found it to hold principles of sacred geometry.  In the 21st century, there is now a movement to take back this symbol to represent the Divine Feminine again, rather than how it has been wrongly accused as something dark. One example is Dan Brown’s book Angels & Demons which refers to the pentagram as a symbol of the Divine Feminine and Venus.

The ancient Celts understood the energy of the pentagram as the Divine Feminine. When the Romans conquered Britain, the two cultures began to mesh and it was the Romans who brought apple trees to Britain. When the Celts cut an apple in half, they saw that the points in the apple formed into the shape of the pentagram. Therefore, when the Romans explained that their goddess Pomona was their goddess of fertility and that her symbol was the apple, it was easy for the Celts to accept and agree with this symbol, as their symbol of the pentagram was right there in the middle of the apple.

The apple then became a popular symbol throughout Europe for fertility. In some parts of Europe, apples were tossed when a couple was married, as a symbolic gesture of fertility for the couple. It was said that the first woman to catch an apple, would be the next to marry. Over time, this custom moved from tossing apples at the wedding, to tossing a bouquet of flowers which included apple blossoms. I’m willing to bet that this may have evolved due to some apple related injuries when tossed at wedding guests. :-) The custom then evolved from tossing apples to bobbing for apples. The tradition continued, that the first person to ‘catch’, i.e., bite into an apple and pull it out from bobbing in the water, would be the next to marry.

Want to find information about your true love using an apple?

Here’s your magically inspired tip of the day!

Select a juicy red apple and peel the skin in one long piece. Hold the peel of the apple in your hand and say aloud, ‘As I fling this apple peel, my true love’s name will be revealed’. Fling the apple peel over your head and turn around to look at the shape that the peel forms on the ground. It is said that the apple peel will form into the first initial of your true love’s name.

Until we meet again in the morrow gentle readers, happy exploring! *~Kala~*
