Dowsing Beyond Duality by David and Erina Cowan

Recently I had the opportunity to review the new book – Dowsing Beyond Duality: Access Your Power to Create Positive Change by David and Erina Cowen, published by Red Wheel/Weiser. David Cowan is a biofeedback trainer and teacher in spiritual communication and the art of dowsing and the author of Navigating the Collapse of Time. Erina Cowan is a former registered nurse who has a joint practice with David Cowan in alternative healing and counseling.

If the term dowsing is new to you, think of it as a form of divination. A common form of dowsing involves using a branch shaped like a “Y” to locate water or minerals buried underground. Over the years this was also referred to as “water-witching” or using the “divining or witching rod”. Dowsing has and is being used by more people than you may think. When I lived in Texas, I met many dowsers who worked for oil and energy companies who employed them to find oil, water and minerals. Farmers around the U.S. and in hundreds of other countries dowse or use dowsers to help them find the best land to plant crops near underwater sources.

To dowse, the branch is held out in front of the person and it interacts between the energy body of the person and the desired element that the person is seeking, such as water, oil or minerals. Some people use copper rods or pendulums instead of branches, it typically depends on which element wood, copper etc, that the person is most comfortable using.  I remember when I first began to study Traditional Feng Shui and received my first lo-pan, which is the compass used in feng shui. I was instructed to hold the compass in front of my abdomen area, rather than up in the air or closer to the chest area where you might naturally hold a compass. The reason was that the kidneys and adrenal glands energetically interact with the earth energies and is the area where you can receive the best and clearest reading.  Dowsing works in much the same manner and the best results are found when the rod or branch is held lower in the abdomen, near the kidneys.

In the Cowan’s book, they provide a general how-to guide to the art of dowsing, explaining the terminology involved with the process. For a beginner who is wondering how to dowse, the book provides an easy to read, comprehensive guide. It explains that dowsing can be used for much more than finding good land to plant crops or search for oil and focuses on how to use a pendulum to dowse for personal answers and to connect with the higher self and spiritual realms. Techniques are included on how to dowse to determine personal blocks to relationships and emotional, spiritual and environmental issues. You’ll learn how to dowse to sense the energy in your home, connect with your energy bodies and find blockages in your energy and environmental fields.

What I found very helpful for those who already dowse and are professionals in the field, are the over sixty diagrams in the book which detail the energetic alignments in the third, fourth and fifth dimension and explain internal and external influences. The Cowans show how to use the pendulum–not only to find lost objects or make daily decisions–but also to deepen one’s self-realization and create positive change in one’s life and in the world.  Overall, a great how to guide for beginners and professionals to deepen their understanding of the art and science of dowsing.
