Looking for a star studded evening to make a wish and heal something from the past? You’re in luck, for this New Year’s Eve delivers a magical blend of a Full Blue Moon, complete with a partial lunar eclipse, in the midst of a Mercury Retrograde. This rare combination won’t be experienced again for another 29 years, so take note and prepare for a New Year’s Eve celebration full of surprises.

La Luna will be in full regalia this evening, showing her many moods, as she shimmers in her glory, confronts her shadow side with the eclipse and emerges reborn during a retrograde. As her children on earth, we should take note that this moon phase is in the astrological sign of Cancer, which will create a significant impact with water (liquids) and soul mates (relationships). Pay particular attention to what you drink on New Year’s Eve, for with each glass you raise to a toast, the energy will be heightened. This creates a rare opportunity to truly manifest your desires by imbuing into the liquid what you are thinking and saying as you make each toast. You truly can activate your libations with your energy, turning them into magical potions which you then drink, thereby absorbing them into your being.

New Year’s Eve through mid January 2010 is in the midst of a Mercury Retrograde. During this period, past events will return to be reflected upon and dealt with. Use this powerful time wisely to heal old wounds and forgive, starting out the New Year with a clean slate. Retrogrades can bring about the power to reconnect, to reveal, to release, relinquish, relive, revive, recognize, renew and restore. Think carefully and choose your actions wisely as this would be an excellent time to acknowledge and let go of something from your past or to recognize something wonderful that you’ve overlooked in the past, which is being presented to you again.

Remember that with the full moon in Cancer, emotions will be running high, so expect it to also provide a roller coaster ride throughout the evening. If you’re in Vegas, don’t be surprised to discover that you got married overnight and if you’re looking to get pregnant, focus passionate loving thoughts into your liquid libation and stir these thoughts throughout your body, activating this energy for the New Year.

To further enhance the energy of this spectacular evening, wear something that shimmers to celebrate the moon. Particularly powerful would be the color silver in clothing, jewelry made from the sea or if you have moonstone, this is the perfect night to let it shine.

Gentle readers, if you have been looking for a sign, a moment in time where you can connect mind, body and spirit to a particular event, in order to create transformation in your life, this New Year’s Eve is for you. Surround yourself in white light, wear a cowrie shell for protection and luck, write down the wish that you truly want to have activated in your life and raise your glass in a toast and proclaim it to be. Drink the full contents of your glass in three swallows and let the magic begin. Now go ‘trip the light fantastic’ and celebrate La Luna in her glory and new beginnings.

The 12 Days – 12 Gifts of Enlightenment series is based upon the “spirit of the season”, not pertaining to any particular faith. Consider it a nod to ancient cultures who celebrated the Winter Solstice with festivals, rituals and parties, heralding the return of the light -  the Sun. Ancient Rome celebrated the solstice holiday as Saturnalia, and Celtic Druids created bonfires in a three day ritual as the Oak King battled with the Holly King and won back the light. History of these celebrations are found with the honoring of Mithra, in Egyptian practices of Osiris and in various societies around the world. The seasonal observance for many at this time extends to January 6th in conjunction with the story of the Three Wise Men, the Magi who brought gifts upon their arrival. The 12 gifts of enlightenment are shared throughout the celebrations of the return of the light and need not necessarily culminate on a particular day. Perhaps it alludes to a time to create new rituals including for the New Year, with heartfelt intentions to bring abundance, joy, good health and inner wisdom.

The Twelve Days – Twelve Gifts of Enlightenment are a reminder that on the journey to esoteric wisdom, knowledge is the first key. As was written above a mystery school temple in ancient Greece, “Man, Know Thyself”, it has always been of tremendous value to spend time in self-observation and introspection. One of the ways to begin this journey, is to look at the past, review the history of humanity and discern the truth to see how history changes and is rewritten according to cultural and political mores. Begin with your own investigation of the origins and history of the holidays including Christmas, New Years and Easter to discover how they have evolved to the modern day concepts.

You may find during your research, that many of the holidays now celebrated began as a completely different celebration. My intent gentle reader, is not to discourage you from celebrating each holiday, but rather to encourage you to delve deeper into the history and find the path which is right for you to follow. As Anais Nin said, “The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery”.

On this path, I’d like to recommend two books that I have enjoyed reading this year, which share a particular perspective of western history. This brings us to:

Gift Number 9 – Give the Gift of Knowledge and Discernment.

The first book is: How the Irish Saved Civilization: The Untold Story of Ireland’s Heroic Role from the Fall of Rome to the Rise of Medieval Europe by Thomas Cahill. The title is a bit ambitious, as most any student of history will note that the Greeks and the Eastern Byzantine Empire continued to exist and document historic record before and after the fall of Rome, as well as many eastern cultures. Perhaps a more accurate title would be: How the Irish Evolved By Combining Roman Catholic Beliefs with their Traditional Pagan Beliefs, creating Many Holidays and Cultural Beliefs Which We Celebrate Today. Having said that, one can plainly see which title is more attention grabbing. Cahill describes the decline and fall of Rome and how the Irish, due to their love of preservation, transcribed this written history during the Dark Ages, when recorded history throughout many parts of western Europe was on the verge of being destroyed by Barbarian cultures. The second portion of the book explains how Irish myth, lore and culture then placed its own unique stamp on civilization, blending a mix of Christianity beginning with St. Patrick, into traditional Irish pagan rites and customs. Cahill shares some of the life and history of St. Patrick, a roman boy who came from a family lineage of tax collectors, who was enslaved and taken to Ireland. Not mentioned in regard to the stories of St. Patrick are the reports of Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, which chronicle how the Druid culture was driven from Ireland by Christian monks beginning with Patrick.

The beauty and passion of the Irish people is vividly described as Cahill shares his love of poetry and brings ancient Ireland to life, which also serves to stimulate popular interest in the history of western civilization. My hope is that the reader would begin here with this read, recognize it as only one piece to the puzzle and then venture further into study of the Greeks, Romans, Armenians, Coptics, Arabic, and many other cultures, all of whom carried forth the history from these dark times.

Book recommendation number two is, How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe’s Poorest Nation Created Our World and Everything in It, by Arthur Herman. Particularly interesting is that the UK title for this book is The Scottish Enlightenment, which is a better representation of the information found in this book. This also leads to the question, Must we as Americans require alleged super hero titles for every book in order for it to sell? Both books in review here, extend their titles to the extreme, but this is certainly not a new concept. One only has to look at American history to see how much of it has been fabricated to “sell the sizzle”. A quick example being the focus on the midnight ride of Paul Revere, when in reality, Israel Bissell rode farther and faster, but didn’t have what it took to turn him into a superstar to rally the crowds.

In How the Scots Invented the Modern World, Herman lists an impressive collection of Scots and their accomplishments including Andrew Carnegie, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Walter Scott and John Muir. One of the best features of this book, is that it endeavors to explain Scottish history and development, without over-fanciful ethnic pride clouding the vision. An interesting read to add to a long list of selections for history buffs, mark this one as the tale of the 18th century as the age of enlightenment for Scotland.

To discuss the topic of love is akin to defining the cosmos – where to begin and who knows where it ends. Perhaps the best we can do is discuss love at the current level and vibration in which are are cognizant of it, measured by our ability to receive and reciprocate this vibrational energy. This would offer an explanation as to why love is experienced so differently by each person and can not completely be defined.

My favorite philosophical thought on love is a quote by Deepak Chopra: “The love you seek is seeking you at the moment. Your longing, your deep fantasies about being loved are the mere shadows of the melting sweetness that makes spirit want to love you. Be honest about seeking and be alert to the moments when love is showing itself to you…The messages of love may not be clear to anyone else around you, even those most intimate to you.  That doesn’t matter, they are meant for you and you alone.”

Deepak expresses the universal power of love, which is greater than we may have imagined, as well as making the point that it is in our inherent destiny to love and be loved. Whether you are experiencing this love in your life at this time is not as important. What is important is the recognition that you are love, are worthy of love and love is waiting for you.

On an existential path, we can understand and embrace this concept and certainly agree. But like most things that we work to understand and activate here on the earth plane, we could use some guidance.

This brings us gentle reader to gift number eight in the 12 Days-12 Gifts of Enlightenment for the metaphysically inclined in your life.

Perhaps the best gift we can give or receive is as the old adage states, “to stop and smell the roses”. Taking the time each day to adopt simple practices such as breathing deeply, creating ten minute mental breaks and gentle stretching can provide tremendous benefit to our well-being. After working for hours hunched over a computer screen, lean back and stretch! Stand up and slowly take a deep breath in and blow out. Stretch your arms over your head. Gently turn side to side and stretch your body slowly, feel each muscle as it is stretched, while breathing in a slow, relaxed manner. Be aware of your body, your neck, your shoulders, back, arms, and hands. Work your way gently down your body, stretching each part and while doing so, continue to breathe deeply and connect with your body, silently thanking it for all that it does for you.

This can also be done while sitting at your desk, sit back for a moment, relax your arms and stretch. A simple three minute break of stretching, combined with deep breathing and relaxing, can clear your thoughts and bring renewed energy to your body, making you feel better and create renewed clarity and focus to the project on hand.

Simple, yet highly effective, these gifts are easy and the rewards are long lasting. “Bona valetudo melior est quam maximae divitiae”. Translation: “Good health is worth more than the greatest wealth.”

Galina shares the cultural history of the Norse runes and the story of Odin, (the Norse God who won the runes through his sacrifice at the World Tree) and then takes the reader on a journey into each of the individual runes, in a way rarely shared and taught in these modern times. Taking the reader beyond what is commonly known about runes and their history, Galina exemplifies runes as living spirits and guides the reader into discerning how to create a relationship with the spirits of the runes. Intended for an experienced magic practicioner who is well versed in working with the other realms, I recommend it for metaphysical adventurers who choose to go well beyond the mundane into the ancient veils of mysticism and divination.

Life appears these days to be moving at the speed of light and gaining momentum each day as new discoveries reveal that electrons may be able to spin faster than the speed of light, thus challenging Einstein’s theory. As we enter a new understanding of global consciousness in our role as conscious creators, we are transcending time and space as we knew it to exist before and entering into a new state of be-ing.

A marker of this future change of the ages is the year of 2012 and the discussions, musings, and prophecies of what will occur during this time proliferate. In the esoteric teachings, it is said that the changes of each age unfold over a long period of time, with certain dates that we mark as displaying significant shifts. In my humble opinion gentle readers, we have been experiencing great shifts of consciousness and change for the past century, one example being the 1960′s with the peace and love movement, proceeding onward through today.

As we continue on our wisdom seeking journey of 12 Days – 12 Gifts of Enlightenment, gifts to give to the metaphysically inclined in your life, we’ve reached Gift Number Five, which is:

Give the Gift of the Future

The future has science and spirituality working in tandem to unravel the mysteries of the universe. Mystics have proclaimed these universal truths for eons, and now the time has come where the general consciousness of humanity is open to receiving this knowledge as we shift from the third dimension, into the 4th and 5th dimension. During this new age of enlightenment in which we are living, science is beginning to catch up and catch on to what the mystics have been teaching and are discovering tangible ways to study these teachings through quantum physics.

This Friday, December 18th on the Explore Your Spirit with Kala show, I’m speaking with Dr. Marc Seifer, author of: Transcending the Speed of Light: Consciousness, Quantum Physics and the Fifth Dimension. Dr. Seifer shares his study of the new scientific understanding of consciousness and the mind as a fifth dimension of reality, including the existence of the fifth dimension–one of mind, where time is transcended and the barrier of the speed of light is actually a gateway demarking the fifth dimension. In his book, Transcending the Speed of Light, with a foreword by Dr. Stanley Krippner, Marc Seifer contends that the inadequacy of four-dimensional models to account for our experience of mental phenomena points to the consciousness of the mind as a higher organizing principle, a fifth dimension where thoughts are as real and quantifiable as our familiar physical world. He shows that because thought enables us to move backward and forward through time–reflecting on the past and making plans for the future–this fifth dimension of mind breaks the laws of relativity, thereby transcending the speed of light. His extensive study of this fifth dimension ranges from relativity and ether theory to precognition, telepathy, and synchronicity, all from the perspective of the conscious universe.

A wonderful read with fascinating theories, Marc J. Seifer has been featured in The Washington Post, Scientific American, MITs Technology Review and The New York Times. In Europe he has appeared in The Economist, Nature and New Scientist. With publications in Wired, Cerebrum, Civilization, Extraordinary Science, Lawyer’s Weekly, Journal of Psychohistory and Psychiatric Clinics of North America, Dr. Seifer is internationally recognized as an expert on the inventor Nikola Tesla (the subject of his doctoral dissertation). He has lectured at the United Nations in New York, Federal Reserve Bank in Boston, at Kings College, Cambridge University and Oxford University in England, and LucasFilms Industrial Light & Magic. His book Wizard: The Life & Times of Nikola Tesla is “Highly Recommended” by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Press) , a pocket size guide to 2012 by Geoff Stray. As the saying goes, great things come in small packages and this guide does not disappoint. Geoff includes illustrations, diagrams, and concise texts covering ancient Egypt, the Mayan prophecies, solar cycles, the galactic alignment and my favorite, page 12 on the Kalachakra Prophecy, also known as time-wheel teachings. As Santa’s and Saturnalia’s little helper, I’m moving on to Day Three of the 12 Gifts of Enlightenment. Today’s magical, mystical and memorable gift for the metaphysician in your life is… Gift Number Three: Connecting Heaven and Earth with the Gift of Prayer

Welcome to Day Two of the 12 Gifts of Enlightenment holiday gift list. Day One’s gift was: Give The Gift of Intuition and the Goddess

Enlightenment Gift Number Two:
Give The Gift of Light,  Illumination and Purification

One thing that almost everyone can agree on, is that no gift can compete with the beauty, simplicity and elegance provided by Mother Nature. From the uplifting scent of pine and balsam fir evergreen trees and garland boughs, to the glorious red, pink and white colors of pointsetta’s and amaryllis flowers, to the crackling sounds of the Yule log in the fire with chestnuts roasting, it’s a wonder filled natural holiday. The sights, sounds and scents of nature’s finest, renew the mind, body and spirit.

As we approach the Winter Solstice, which provides the shortest amount of daylight of the year, give your loved ones the gift of light and illumination. With this symbolic gift of light, it reminds us that no matter how dark the situation may appear around us, light and enlightenment will always return.  During the cold dark nights of winter,  we are given the opportunity to journey into dark recesses of our shadow selves, as ancient cultures did in ceremonial caves and temples. This personal journey is best taken with a light in hand, to guide us and remind us of the warmth, love and nourishment of the Divine, which is everlasting.

After careful thought and consideration, I believe that I’ve arrived upon the perfect natural gift of light and illumination – the Himalayan Salt Lamp.

The Himalayan mountains provide beautiful formations of rock salt crystals, which are now made into lamps and are available online and in many stores. The lamps are sold on a base and come fitted with a 40 watt bulb which is inserted inside the salt lamp. Once plugged in, the lamp emits a beautiful glow which can range from a deep orange red, to a soft pink, depending upon the color and density of the lamp that you choose. Beyond this stunning light, which softly illuminates a room, the salt lamp also emits negative ions, which are important for all beings.

Studies have shown that negative ions can assist with good health, especially to do with fatigue, headaches, and relieving stress. In addition, they can serve to purify the air and raise our vital energy. Perhaps most importantly, they counteract positive ions which when in too high of levels, can cause depression, insomnia, headaches and general fatigue.
